SANT JULIÀ DE VILATORTA CATALONIA, Spain - Junior Lanay Montgomery scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as the West Virginia University women’s basketball team knocked off Selecció Catalana, 71-55, at the Pavelló Esportiu Municipal on Monday evening.
The Mountaineers (2-0) held a 13 point edge midway in the second quarter before Selecció Catalana went on a 14-4 run to make it a 35-33 contest at the half. Teana Muldrow hit a bucket to push the Mountaineers lead back to 10 with four minutes remaining. West Virginia is now 2-0 during its four-game European tour.
Montgomery, who had 17 of her 21 points in the first, was a dominant force inside and had three of WVU’s five blocks. Freshman Katrina Pardee was the only other Mountaineer in double-figures with 12 points. The Cedar Park, Texas, native had six rebounds in the game.
Teana Muldrow produced a solid all-around effort with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Anja Martin poured in seven points and seven rebounds. Olivia Seggie and Jessica Morton each contributed with eight and six points each, respectively.
Overall, West Virginia controlled the boards with a 48-19 advantage. WVU dished out 16 assists compared to eight for Catalana. Overall, WVU forced 26 SC turnovers compared to just committing 21.
“We were able to get on the boards,” said coach Mike Carey. “We did a great job getting Lanay Montgomery the basketball. She did a great job sealing low. I thought we played a little bit more under control than we did the first game. That was good to see. We are still turning the ball over too much, but the execution was a little bit better today.”
Mireia Vila led all Selecció Catalana scorers with 12 points, while Itziar Llobet finished in double-digits with 10.
“Once again, we played a very good basketball team,” said Carey. “The team had several players that have played Division I or Division II basketball and pro ball here in Spain. These are the best teams we have played overseas since my time at West Virginia University.”
West Virginia opened up to a commanding, 23-13, lead after one quarter. Montgomery had a quarter-best nine points during that stanza. Selecció Catalana outscored WVU 20-12 in the second quarter to make it a 35-33 halftime score. Llobet strung together eight points to lead her team in that period.
A low-scoring third quarter helped the Mountaineers push its eight up to 49-41. The Mountaineers exploded on an 8-2 run to push their advantage to 14. Muldrow led all WVU scorers with eight points in the final period.
WVU plays Selecció Catalana once again on Tuesday, August 11 at Pavelló Esportiu Municipal in Julià de Vilatorta Catalonia, Spain. Tuesday’s tip time also changed to 8 p.m. CET/2 p.m. ET instead of the previously scheduled 7 p.m. CET/1 p.m. ET.
