Holmes Named to Naismith Trophy Watch List

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s basketball senior guard Bria Holmes was one of 50 women’s basketball players named to the Naismith Trophy Watch List today.
Holmes, a Preseason All-Big 12 selection, ranks second in the league in scoring with 18.8 points per game. The New Haven, Connecticut, native is shooting at a 60.4 percent (61-of-101) clip and is second on the team with 28 assists. She also is averaging 5.3 rebounds per game, while second on the team with nine steals. The senior guard ranks No. 9 all-time on the Mountaineers’ all-time scoring list with 1,562 career points. This is the second year that Holmes has been named to the Naismith Trophy watch list.
In addition to being named to the Naismith Top 50 list, Holmes is presently on the John R. Wooden Award watch list.
Holmes joins four other Big 12 athletes named to the Top 50 list including Imani Boyette (Texas), Nina Davis (Baylor), Niya Johnson (Baylor) and Britney Martin (Oklahoma State).
The Atlanta Tipoff Club administers the Naismith Awards, which have become the most prestigious national honors in all of college basketball. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, the Naismith Trophy recognizes the top Men’s and Women’s College Basketball Players of the Year.
The Naismith Trophy was first presented to UCLA’s Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) in 1969. Old Dominion’s Anne Donovan won the inaugural Women’s Naismith Trophy in 1983. The midseason women’s basketball Top 30 list will be announced on Feb. 11, 2016.
