MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a strong showing at the Head of the Occoquan, the West Virginia University novice rowing team travels to Pittsburgh for a scrimmage against Duquesne, Pitt and Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, Nov. 7, on the Allegheny River.
The Mountaineers will race two varsity eight boats and two varsity four boats.
“We are looking to end the fall season on a positive note,” said novice coach Amanda Merritt. “The majority of our novices have only been with the sport for two months, and hopefully, this last race will show off all of the hard work they have put in. It will definitely be a stepping stone leading into winter training.”
The novice team saw its first action on Oct. 31, when they competed in the Head of the Occoquan, on the Occoquan Reservoir. WVU’s first-year rowers won three medals.
The medals came with first-and second-place finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ and a bronze-medal finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8. The two WVU crews that took home gold and silver in the novice 4+ also teamed up to earn bronze in the novice 8 event.
“Hopefully, the success they had at the Head of the Occoquan will give them some confidence in their ability and fitness as we head into competition with three good teams,” Merritt said.
Saturday will conclude the fall season for the Mountaineers.
