AUSTIN, Texas – Unable to match one of the nation’s top teams, the West Virginia University volleyball team fell to No. 5 Texas, 3-0, in Big 12 play at Gregory Gym in Austin on Thursday. The Mountaineers (5-17, 0-9) dropped the match to the Longhorns (20-2, 10-1) in set scores of 25-24, 25-21 and 25-9.
Morgan Montgomery had a team-high 15 kills for the Mountaineers, hitting for a .244 clip. She has 300 kills on the season after scoring just 38 as a freshman in 2014.
Behind Montgomery, Dzeni Hadzisehovic notched eight kills, hitting a team-best .316. Caleah Wells went for four kills, while Hannah Shreve had a pair of kills in addition to a block assist. Shreve, Montgomery, Haley Roe and Mia Swanegan teamed to produce WVU’s 2.0 team blocks. Montgomery had a pair of aces, with Swanegan adding another.
Haley Roe assisted on 23 of West Virginia’s 30 kills, as the Mountaineers finished with a team attacking percentage of .174. Gianna Gotterba had five assists in addition to five digs. MaTia Hughes guided the floor defense with 10 digs, with Roe chipping in seven and Melvina Brown adding six.
Texas hit .488 with 45 kills and 7.5 team blocks.
“I thought we played well in the second set,” said coach Reed Sunahara. “It’s unfortunate that we couldn’t carry that momentum. We simply didn’t execute in the third set. Finishing is something that we’ve worked on all season, and we will continue to work on that and get better every set.”
A pair of early Montgomery kills and a Swanegan service ace put the Mountaineers in front, 4-2, early in set one. The No. 2 Longhorns responded with a 6-0 run soon after, taking a 12-6 advantage. Wells and Shreve each found the court to keep WVU in the set, but Texas rattled of five straight in grabbing a 19-8 lead. Montgomery notched two more kills, but the Longhorns finished things off for the 25-14 1win.
Back-to-back service aces from Montgomery gave West Virginia a 5-3 lead – an advantage they would keep for a good portion of the second set. Montgomery carried the momentum, putting down a pair of kills to help the Mountaineers stay on top 11-8. Texas came back to tie the set, 15-15, following a media timeout and followed with a 3-0 run to lead 19-16. Montgomery had back-to-back kills, then added another soon after to keep WVU within two at 21-20. A Longhorn attack went long to bring the Mountaineers within one, down 21-20, but Texas scored three straight to make it set point, 24-20. Despite a service error to keep the set alive, the Longhorns used a kill to cap the set, 25-21, and take a 2-0 lead.
Texas scored four straight to open the final stanza, taking a 5-1 lead. A Montgomery kill stopped the streak, but the Longhorns were back at it, rattling off four more to go up 9-2 on a block. This time it was Wells who stopped the run with a kill for the Mountaineers, with Hadzisehovic adding consecutive kills as WVU trailed 13-6. However, Texas dominated the rest of the set, taking 12 of the last 15 points for the 25-9 victory and the 3-0 sweep.
West Virginia remains in Texas, traveling to Waco for a Saturday tilt at Baylor. The Mountaineers and Bears will square off at 8 p.m. ET at the Ferrell Center.
