MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Twelve West Virginia University cross country student-athletes were named to the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, announced today.
The 12 Mountaineers were honored for their successes in the classroom, including three who were highlighted for their 4.0 GPA’s, the most among all Big 12 women’s cross country teams.
“We had had 12 members of the team compete in more than one meet this past fall and all 12 are named to the All-Big 12 Academic Team,” said coach Sean Cleary. “Twelve-for-12 is truly an unbelievable achievement. Academics have always been a high priority for this team. This exemplifies the commitment each member of this program has, as well as our academic support staff. Track and Cross Country, while very important to these young ladies, is just a stepping stone for the rest of their lives.”
Amy Cashin, Alyssa Diehl, Maggie Drazba, Rachel Faulds, Brynn Harshbarger, Brianna Kerekes, Corinne Kule, Millie Paladino, Savanna Plombon, Sydney Scott, Paige Szabat and Kelly Williams were recognized on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, with Cashin, Kule and Williams honored for maintaining 4.0. GPA’s.
“Academic performances such as these are proof that they are setting themselves up for wonderful opportunities outside of sports,” said Cleary.
First Team honorees are student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team members hold a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulatively or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
