“I’m very excited to host my annual Fish Fry again in February to benefit causes important to West Virginia. I’ve always said our coal miners and coal mining families are the best people in the world and we have an opportunity to make a difference in cancer research, for a horrible disease that affects so many, and we can do it right here at West Virginia University,” Huggins said.
The Remember The Miners Scholars Program was created in 2011 to provide financial aid to miners, dependents of miners, and students pursuing a career in the mining industry. The Norma Mae Huggins Cancer Research Endowment Fund at the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center was created by the Huggins family to raise money for cancer research in honor of Huggins’ late mother, Norma Mae.
“The Fish Fry is really a very unique event, and also a celebration of West Virginia. We look forward to raising money for our Scholars Program to support talented students in West Virginia who will contribute to our state’s future,” said Jason Parsons, the chairman of the event who co-founded Remember The Miners with Huggins, “We’ll also help Huggs kick off the ‘road to $2 million’ for the next milestone in his effort to raise money that will make a real difference for researchers at WVU to keep looking for a cure to a disease that has touched each of us personally.”
Huggins continued, “The Fish Fry continues to grow year after year. These causes are not only important to me on personal level; they also pay homage to West Virginia while demonstrating a continued commitment to creating a better future for West Virginia.”
Little General Stores, the event’s signature partner, operates over 100 convenience stores and restaurants across West Virginia; one of West Virginia’s top employers, Little General Stores has a deep commitment to the communities they serve. Little General Stores President Greg Darby is chairman of Remember The Miners, and has partnered with the organization on a miners’ helmet campaign, as well as events in Charleston, Beckley, and Morgantown.
The Hazel and J.W. Ruby Community Center, where the Fish Fry is to be held, is located at Mylan Park, a 300 acre state-of-the-art recreational and educational complex situated on over 300 acres of beautifully reclaimed surface-mined property just minutes from downtown Morgantown.
