Mountaineers to Face Stetson Friday Night
November 19, 2015 03:26 PM | Men's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia begins the first of four games in this year’s Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational with Friday night’s match up against Stetson at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers will then face Bethune-Cookman Monday night in Morgantown before heading out to Las Vegas for two games there on Thursday and Friday.
West Virginia will play Richmond Thursday at 5 p.m. ET in a game that will be televised on FOX Sports 1; Friday night’s game against either San Diego State or California will also be televised nationally on FOX Sports 1.
Here on Friday night, the 2-0 Mountaineers will look to continue their winning ways against the Hatters, now 0-2 following season-opening losses to Richmond and Citadel.
Former Oklahoma State player Corey Williams is beginning his third season at Stetson where he owns a 16-48 overall record. Last year, Stetson finished eighth in the Atlantic Sun Conference and has four starters returning from that team.
Five-eleven guard Divine Myles is Stetson’s top scorer averaging 14 points per game while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor.
He is one of five Hatter players currently averaging double digits. The others are 6-foot-3 junior Cameron Harvey (13.0 ppg.), 6-foot-7 junior Brian Pegg (12.5 ppg.), 6-foot-7 freshman Derick Newton (12.0 ppg.) and 6-foot-5 sophomore Luke Doyle (11.5 ppg.)
“They can score the ball, said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins. “They’re really good in transition and they’ve got a bunch of guys that can score the ball.”
West Virginia is coming off a valuable 86-73 victory over James Madison Monday night in Charleston.
“I think we beat a pretty good team in Charleston,” said Huggins. “I think at the end of the year they are going to help us RPI wise; I think they are going to help us in terms of being a top 100 team and maybe a top 50 team.”
The Mountaineers got 19 points and 10 rebounds from junior forward Devin Williams and 19 points on six-of-11 shooting from sophomore guard Jevon Carter.
Senior forward Jonathan Holton contributed 12 points and 12 rebounds while sophomore guard Daxter Miles added 11.
West Virginia had an 11-rebound advantage on the glass against the Dukes and forced 19 turnovers that resulted in 27 points.
The Mountaineers biggest lead was 19 late in the game.
“I thought we played pretty well,” said Huggins. “We went through a couple of spells when we didn’t make any shots but we had good shots. We kind of got the ball where we wanted. We’ve got to really clean up our half-court execution but in spite of that I think we got some pretty good shots.”
Friday night’s game will be televised locally on ROOT Sports. The Mountaineer Sports Network from IMG’s pregame coverage will begin at 6 p.m. on radio affiliates throughout West Virginia and online through leanStream and the mobile app TuneIn.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free at 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
