WVU Heads to Wolfpack Intercollegiate

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University golf team has hit the road once again, this time heading to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the Wolfpack Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course. The tournament is hosted by the N.C. State Wolfpack.
The first round of the 36-hole event will start with an 11:30 a.m. shotgun start on Monday. Golfers will resume play for the final round on Tuesday, teeing off of holes one and ten starting at 8 a.m. The event was previously scheduled for 54-holes but was cut to 36 due to weather concerns.
“This was a very quick turnaround for us, with only two days of practice to get ready,” said coach Sean Covich. “I hope the guys respond well. I know the North Carolina area has been experiencing heavy amounts of rain, so the course conditions will be a challenge this week.”
The weather has also affected the field, as Rhode Island will be replaced by UNC Greensboro at the tournament. Augusta, Chattanooga, USC Upstate, Campbell, Lipscomb, Loyola-Maryland, Rhode Island, Seton Hall, Temple, George Washington, Western Carolina, Wofford, Hartford and Drexel will join the Wolfpack and the Mountaineers in the field.
Chris Williams, Easton Renwick, Max Sear, Tae Wan Lee and Avery Schneider will make up the Mountaineer squad this weekend, with Alan Cooke competing as an individual. Williams led the team at the Shoal Creek Invitational hosted by Graeme McDowell in Birmingham, Alabama, last weekend, while Renwick posted WVU’s top individual performance of the season at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in mid-September, tying for 10th place with a score of 208 for five under par. Freshman Max Sear will be competing in his team-best fourth tournament of the season.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 12th-place finish at the Shoal Creek Invite, shooting a team score of 302-301-298=901 (+37). WVU’s lowest team round of the season was a 283 at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, West Virginia, at the Joe Feaganes Invitational. The Mountaineers also shot a season-low three-round team score of 283-293-283=859 (+7) at the tournament.
The Lonnie Poole Golf Course was designed by Arnold Palmer and boasts a par-71, 7,358-yard layout. It has played host to several NCAA Regionals in recent years. West Virginia is paired with N.C. State and Chattanooga for the tournament.
