WVU Races Away with Four Medals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team posted four top-five finishes and won four medals, including a gold, at the Head of the Occoquan in Fairfax Station, Virginia, on Saturday.
Eight of the Mountaineers’ 10 boats posted top-10 finishes on Saturday on the Occoquan Reservoir. WVU’s four medals came with first and second-place finishes in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+, a bronze medal finish in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 and a fifth-place finish in the Women’s Championship 4+. The two WVU crews that took home gold and silver in the novice 4+ also teamed up to earn the bronze in the novice 8 event.

“I thought we had a really good day on the water, especially with the three novice boats that medaled,” said WVU novice coach Amanda Merritt. “The girls that medaled in the fours were on land for 15 minutes before they got back in the water. I’m glad they were able to see the fruits of their labor.”
The Mountaineers raced one boat in the Women’s Championship 8 event and three boats in the Women’s Championship 4+ race. In their first regatta of their collegiate careers, the novice squad raced three crews in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 8 event and three boats in the Women’s Collegiate Novice 4+ race.
In the first race of the day, the Mountaineers’ A boat won gold and WVU’s B boat captured a silver medal in the 31-team Collegiate Novice 4+.

WVU’s first boat, rowed by Haley Huff, Amy Hoaglund, Madison Stepp, Grace Dever and coxswain Cherlyn Tegtneyer, placed first out of 31 boats with a 21:55.61. The second novice four boat consisted of Amanda Garn, Kirsten Kron, Elizabeth Young, Tia Carr and coxswain Kara Ehreberger crossed the finish line in 22:17.98 to win the silver medal.
West Virginia’s C boat also placed 16th out of 31 teams in the Collegiate Novice 4+ race. The boat was crewed by Rachel Ridenour, Alexis Brown, Danielle Arnold, Nicole Bender and coxswain Nicole and coxswain Nicole Sciabarra,
Next up was the Championship 8 event, where WVU placed seventh out of 26 teams with a time of 18:46.35. The Mountaineers’ first varsity eight was raced by Elizabeth Hooper, Emily Stasi, Susannah Hartlove, Sadie Kalathunkal, Lillian Westerman, Madison Hrynda, Carly Ledbetter, Megan Brophy and coxswain Emily Deming.
To begin the afternoon for WVU, coxswain Emily Deming, Jacqueline Hunter, Abbigail Rees, Marika Hoskins and Aria Asselta captured a medal in the Championship 4+. The crew placed fifth out of 31 teams with a time of 20:42.16.
The varsity four crew placed fifth out of 31-teams in the Championship 4+.
Also in the 31-team Championship 4+ race, the Mountaineers’ A and B boat placed eighth and 12th, respectively.
In the last race of the day, the Mountaineers had three entries in the Collegiate Novice 8 race, and the novices finished the day much like they began it. A combination from the crews that medaled in the Collegiate Novice 4+ event raced in the novice eight boat to claim a bronze medal with a time of 20:06.06. The novice eight boat was raced by Haley Huff, Amy Hoaglund, Amanda Garn, Kirsten Kron, Tia Carr, Elizabeth Young, Madison Stepp, Grace Dever and coxswain Cherlyn Tegtneyer.
The novice eight boat claimed a bronze medal in the last race of the day for the Mountaineers.
Also in the 21-team Collegiate Novice 8 race, the Mountaineers’ B and C boat placed eighth and 16th, respectively.
The Mountaineers return to the water on Saturday, Nov. 7, when the novice squad takes on Duquesne, Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, on the Allegheny River.
