WVU Opens Fall Season in Pittsburgh

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team opens its fall season at the 29th Annual Head of the Ohio Regatta on Saturday, Oct. 3, on the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh.
One of the largest one-day regattas in the country, the Mountaineers will compete against a number of high caliber opponents on Saturday. The Head of the Ohio is hosted by the Three Rivers Rowing Association, and has been ranked as one of the 10 largest fall races in the country.
The Mountaineers will face 12 boats in the Women’s Open 8+ and 16 crews in the Women’s Open 4+. The Women’s Open 8+ is set to begin at 8:45 a.m., followed by the Women’s Open 4+ at 12:15 p.m.
“The team is excited to compete, especially those from the Pittsburgh area,” said coach Jimmy King. “There’s probably a bit of nervousness for them too because while we’ve been training for about five weeks now, we’ve only been on the water about a dozen times.
“My expectations for this weekend are primarily about competing to the best of our abilities. The racing conditions could be quite challenging based on the weather forecast, but regardless of the conditions, I want to see our crews race and compete at their best relative to this point in the year.”
At last season’s Head of the Ohio, the Mountaineers posted three top 10 finishes in the Women’s Open 8+ event, with their first boat earning a second-place finish in the 17-team field.
