LUBBOCK, Texas – West Virginia found out what can happen when you have a bad day in the Big 12 Conference.

Quarterback Seth Doege threw six touchdown passes, and the Red Raider defense harassed West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith all afternoon in a resounding 49-14 victory over the No. 5 Mountaineers before a fired-up homecoming crowd of 57,328 on Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. The loss snapped West Virginia's nine-game winning streak dating back to last season.

Doege threw touchdown passes to four different players, including three to Darrin Moore of 2, 29 and 7 yards, and SaDale Foster added a 53-yard TD run right before the end of the half in an impressive all-around performance by the Red Raiders, now 5-1, 2-1.

Doege’s other TD throws were for 39 yards to tight end Jace Amaro, 19 yards to Eric Ward and 16 yards to Marcus Kennard. Doege finished the afternoon completing 32-of-42 passes for 499 yards, while Amaro was one of 11 different players to catch a pass for the Red Raiders. He finished the afternoon with a game-best 156 yards receiving while Moore had nine catches for 92 yards. Texas Tech has had 10-plus players catch at least one pass in all six games so far this season.

Foster finished the game with 82 yards on 10 carries for Tech.

Equally impressive was the play of the Red Raider defense, which pressured Smith consistently and got West Virginia’s explosive playmakers to the ground whenever they had the football in space.

A sequence that really summed up the Mountaineers’ afternoon came late in the third quarter when West Virginia drove from its own 25 to the Tech 2, picking up three first downs on runs from Dustin Garrison. Then, Tech stiffened at the goal line, stuffing Andrew Buie at the 2 before forcing two incomplete Smith passes to take over on downs. The Red Raiders proceeded to march 98 yards in 15 plays, with Doege capping the drive with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Moore in the corner of the end zone with 5:37 left.

Smith ended his day by completing 29-of-55 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Buie carried 21 times for 71 yards, while Tavon Austin had nine receptions for 99 yards. Stedman Bailey had six catches for 56 yards before leaving the game in the third quarter with an unspecified injury.

"They rushed four guys and sometimes they got there and sometimes they didn't," said West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen. "We just didn't execute on offense. It's a team loss. They outplayed us, they outcoached us and on all three sides of the ball did better than we did."

The Red Raiders had 438 yards of offense by halftime to build a commanding 35-7 lead. In the second half, Tech was content to run the clock and rely on its defense to close things out.

Dustin Garrison finished the scoring for West Virginia with 2:41 remaining when he rushed in from the 2.

"It was a poor peformance defensively, but they played better in the second half," said Holgorsen. "We just gave (the defense) no hope on offense."

It was Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville’s second victory over a Top 5-ranked team during his coaching tenure, and it was the Red Raiders’ first triumph over a Top 5 team since beating No. 1 Texas, 39-33, in 2008. It was Tech’s fifth win over a Top-5 team in school history in Lubbock.

Most of the fans remained until the end of the game and celebrated the start of the fourth quarter by singing along to The Temptations' “My Girl” while it was being played on the public address system. Action was interrupted briefly midway through the fourth quarter when a shirtless fan ran onto the field before eventually being tackled by game security after a 50-yard jaunt down the middle of the field.

And then at the end of the game, festive Red Raider fans stormed the field and celebrated at the 50 yard line while Kool & The Gang’s “Celebration” blared on the PA system.

West Virginia (5-1, 2-1) ends its two-game tour of Texas by returning home next Saturday to face undefeated Kansas State in a game that will kick off at 7 p.m. and will be televised nationally by Fox.

The Wildcats defeated Iowa State earlier today to run their record 6-0.

Texas Tech travels to TCU to face the Horned Frogs Saturday, on Oct. 20.
