Track: Grandt Places 7th at Olympic Trials

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Former West Virginia track and cross country All-American Clara Grandt placed seventh in the women’s marathon Saturday morning at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Houston, Tex.
The West Union, W.Va., native finished the 26.2-mile race in two hours, 30 minutes and 46 seconds, just 5:08 behind winner Shalane Flanagan, who completed the course in 2:26:38. Desiree Davila came in second in 2:25:55, while Kara Goucher placed third in 2:26:06.
Ranked as the No. 7 marathon runner in the country, Grandt’s run for the 2012 London Olympic Games came to a close as Flanagan, Davila and Goucher advance to compete in London this summer with their top-three finishes at the race. Arriving just ahead of Grandt was No.4-ranked Amy Hastings (2:27:17), Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (2:29:45) and Deena Kastor (2:30:40).
During her WVU career, Grandt was named an All-American in three sports (2010) and also earned cross country All-America honors in 2009. She was also named the 2009 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year.
For the men’s marathon run, Meb Keflezighi (2:09:08), Ryan Hall (2:09:30) and Abdi Abdirahman (2:09:47) will represent the United States in London with their respective finishes.
