2010 XC SEASON RESULTS
MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – With aspirations of winning a BIG EAST championship in October, the No. 15 West Virginia University cross country team was able to foresee the talent level of the league Saturday at the BIG EAST Preview in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Mountaineers stacked up well against the competition, earning a third-place finish with 85 points behind conference foes No. 9 Syracuse (31) and Connecticut (47). WVU finished ahead of DePaul (90), South Florida (118), Le Moyne (197), Seton Hall (206), Bryant and Stratton (265) and SUNY ESF (267).
WVU was paced by sophomore transfer Kaitlyn Gillespie, who finished in first place overall in the field of 76 runners with a 5K time of 18:28.2. The Cuyahoga Falls, OH, native beat Syracuse's Sarah Pagano to the finish line by 20 seconds.
Senior Maria Dalzot made her 2010 debut with an impressive finish by arriving second for the team in 16th place overall in 19:46. Sophomores Hallie Portner and Aubrey Moskal displayed their future potential by coming in 23rd and 25th place, respectively.
Junior Sarah-Anne Brault finished close behind in 26th place with a time of 20:10 as the last scorer for the Mountaineers. Redshirt freshmen Allison Pettit and Chelsea Jarvis arrived in 32nd and 33rd place, respectively. Senior Jamie Cokeley came in 34th place in 20:37, followed by junior Stephanie Caruso (38th) and sophomore Jordan Hamric (39th).
The Mountaineers will have a few weeks of rest and practice and return to action Friday, Oct. 1, at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
