"I am happy with the team's performance in their first meet of the season," coach Sean Cleary says. "For Karly Hamric to run one the best meets in her career today was big and I am thrilled with how competitive she was. This group ran against very good Division I talent today and a second-place finish is an exciting way to start the year."
The Mountaineers took second with 50 points, behind Maryland (21), and in front of St. Joseph (59), Wilmington (127), UMES (142) and Delaware State (158).
Hamric, a Bruceton Mills, W.Va., native crossed the line at 18:33.30 to lead the team.
Sophomore Stephanie Caruso and freshman Hallie Portner also placed well, finishing in sixth and seventh. Caruso finished in sixth (19:05.87), while Portner took seventh (19:06.85) in her first collegiate race. Also scoring for the Mountaineers was freshman Aubrey Moskal, who finished 21st (19:52.39) and senior Jamie Cokeley, who placed 26th (20:21.06).
The Mountaineers are set to return to action on Oct. 2, with a trip to the Paul Shore Invite in Bethlehem, Pa.
