MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University cross country team is set to begin its 2009 season with a trip to the Lid-Lifter Invitational at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Princess Anne, Md. Race time is set for 10 a.m.
The Mountaineers will face competition from St. Joseph, Delaware State, Hampton, Wilmington College, Norfolk State and Morgan State.
"The girls that will be racing this weekend are excited to get going and find out where their summer preparations have brought them," coach Sean Cleary says. "Your first meet of the year is always fun, especially when you travel. It makes the entire off season training feel real. We are going to run some of the young ladies this weekend that are trying to earn spots on the BIG EAST team for later in the season."
Leading the Mountaineers in their first competition of the season, will be seniors Karly Hamric and Brenna Hagerty, sophomore Stephanie Caruso and freshmen Hallie Portner and Aubrey Moskal.
Both Hamric and Caruso ran in last season's ECAC Championship in New York City, where Hamric posted a 47th-place finish, while Caruso finished 52nd. Hagerty looks to have her first race as a Mountaineer after graduating from West Virginia Wesleyan, while Portner and Moskal look to compete in their first collegiate race.
The Mountaineers are looking to have an exciting season in 2009, after a historic fourth-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Championships. Seniors Marie-Louis Asselin and Keri Bland return this season after earning their second-straight All-America honors.
