MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia cross country team is once again ranked No. 4 in the national poll announced today by the United States Track and Field and Cross Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
"Preseason rankings are very flattering," coach Sean Cleary says. "However, the real racing begins over the next few weeks and things will really be more reflective over the next month or so."
Washington remains at the No.1 spot, followed by Oregon and Florida State, while Villanova once again rounds out the top 5. Overall, three BIG EAST teams are in the top 20 with WVU and Villanova at No. 4 and 5, and Georgetown at No. 11.
In their last meet, the Mountaineers tied for first place with BIG EAST foe Louisville at the Mid-West Open on Sept. 19, in Kenosha, Wis. Senior Clara Grandt led the team with an overall first-place finish (17:00), for the fastest course time in over 20 years. The West Union, W.Va., native was named as BIG EAST Athlete of the Week for her efforts.
The Mountaineers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 2, with the Paul Short Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
