MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Karly Hamric and junior Jessica O'Connell led the West Virginia University cross country team to a fifth-place showing today at the 2009 ECAC Women's Cross Country Championships, at Van Cortlandt Park, in Bronx, N.Y.
The Mountaineers finished in fifth with 128 points, behind Boston College (54), William and Mary (60), James Madison (116) and Stoney Brook (116).
"The teams that beat us today are all national class distance programs and each of them had NCAA aspirations when the year began," coach Sean Cleary says. "I am very proud that we were able to stay focused on this race. The girls are proud of themselves and so am I."
O'Connel was the first Mountaineer to cross the line, in ninth place with a time of 17:37, while Hamric finished 15th with a time of 17:50. For their efforts, both were named to the all-east team.
