MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team completed the first day of the 2017 Big 12 Indoor Championship in Ames, Iowa, on Friday at Iowa State’s Lied Recreation Athletic Facility.
To highlight the first day of the Big 12 Championship, five Mountaineers garnered All-Big 12 honors for finishing in the top eight in the final events – junior Jillian Forsey, senior Megan Yuan, juniors Bria Welker and Maggie Drazba and redshirt freshman Candace Jones.
“We came here with the goal of earning eight All-Big 12 performers,” said coach Sean Cleary. “While the day did not go as well as we hoped in certain events, we did leave he track with five women garnering All-Big 12 accolades.”
In the women’s 5,000-meter run, junior Jillian Forsey placed fourth in the finals with a time of 16:17.93.
Redshirt freshman Candice Jones qualified for the finals in the women’s 1,000-meter run after a sixth-place finish in the prelims with a career-best time of 2:52.21. She improved her time by 0.86 seconds set at this year’s Penn State National Open. The 1,000 meter finals are held on Saturday at 4:20 p.m. ET.
The distance medley relay team of Jones, Yuan, Welker and Drazba placed fifth, crossing the finish line in 11:38.39.
Sophomore Danique Bryan took 10th in the women’s long jump finals with a mark of 5.91 meters.
In the women’s pole vault finals, junior Sara Finfrock placed 12th, marking 3.78 meters. Freshman Greer Gumbrecht finished in 14th, matching her season-best mark of 3.68 meters. A trio of Mountaineers tied for 16th, as junior Rebekah Lafata and freshmen Alexis Baublitz and Megan Silva all marked 3.48 meters
Welker finished 15th in the prelims of the women’s 600 yards, crossing the finish line in 1:28.63.
Junior Meghan Jean-Baptiste competed in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, placing 17th in the prelims with a time of 9.08.
In the women’s 400-meter run prelims, sophomore Chaqieta Robinson finished 22nd with a time of 59.53.
The Mountaineer sit 10th entering the second day of competition, totaling nine points. Baylor is atop the team leaderboard with 38 points, followed by the top-five team finishers, Kansas State in second with 36 points, Oklahoma in third (32), Kansas in fourth (28) and Iowa State in fifth (26).
The Mountaineers resume the final day of the championship on Saturday, starting with multi events at noon ET
