Since joining the West Virginia Department of Athletics in 2024, Rob Alsop has had a profound impact on the operations and success of Mountaineer Athletics, serving as the senior deputy athletics director and as chief operating officer of WVU Athletics and Gold & Blue Enterprises, Inc. ("GBE"). He is directly responsible for the day-to-day operations of the department, finance, budget, capital, special projects and strategic planning.
With WVU Athletics, Alsop served as the lead and key negotiator for an unprecedented 10-year naming rights agreement with Hope Gas, Inc., for the naming of the Hope Coliseum, the largest naming rights and sponsorship deal in WVU Athletics’ history.
He developed the strategy and plan for the formation, launch and initial priorities of GBE, the non-profit entity empowering Mountaineer student-athletes and fueling WVU Athletics through innovative NIL and revenue-driven partnerships. He is intimately involved in revenue sharing and NIL planning and execution.
Set to open in 2028, Alsop is the project lead for the West Tower Project, a $156 million renovation at Milan Puskar Stadium that will dramatically increase the premium offerings for WVU Football. He is involved in the selection of key vendors, fundraising and facilitating all decision-making efforts. Alsop served as the lead in securing two of the founding gifts for the West Tower Project and continues to be actively involved in solicitations and corporate partnerships for the structure.
In addition, Alsop is an invaluable advisor to Director of Athletics Wren Baker and has been involved in high profile coaching transitions, hirings, fundraising and engagement with the WVU Board of Governors.
Prior to joining the WVU Department of Athletics, Alsop served as WVU’s vice president of strategic initiatives, working closely with the president of the University and the WVU Board of Governors. Alsop also oversaw multiple units within the University. He was West Virginia’s interim director of athletics in November 2022, when he guided and stabilized the department through a change in leadership.
Prior to WVU, Alsop was chief of staff for West Virginia Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and had roles with U.S. Senator Carte Goodwin and West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin. Between stops in state and federal government, he worked in the law offices of Jackson Kelly as well as Bowles Rice and was the law clerk for US Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Robert B. King.
Alsop earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from West Virginia in 1999 and his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the WVU College of Law in 2002. He continues to serve as an adjunct professor in the WVU College of Law.
