Dayna Charbonneau, Psy.D., began her duties as the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Director and Clinical and Sport Psychology in August 2017.
At WVU, she is responsible for individual/group therapy, crisis intervention, coach consultation, and individual/team sport performance consultation and programming with WVU’s Division I student-athletes. Charbonneau serves as the liaison between WVU Athletics and the Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services. She also has been involved with coordinating mental health best practices protocol development for WVU Athletics, as well as assisting with the coordination and implementation of pre-participation mental health screening, in addition to other mental health programming as it arises.
A native of London, Ontario, Canada, Charbonneau completed her bachelor of arts degree with honors specialization in psychology in 2008 at the University of Western Ontario, where she was also a member of the softball team. Following graduation, she attended the University of Indianapolis to complete her master’s degree and doctorate in clinical psychology. In Indianapolis, she completed practicum placements in college counseling centers, a bariatric medical clinic, and a partial hospitalization/intensive outpatient program for individuals with eating disorders.
Charbonneau completed her doctoral internship in 2016 at Utah State’s Counseling and Psychological Services. While there, she worked in a generalist setting, while increasing her experience working with student-athletes/teams and students with eating/body image concerns.
Charbonneau came to WVU from UC Davis, where she was a postdoctoral psychology resident in Student Health and Counseling Services. As the postdoctoral resident within the Applied Sport Psychology Program within Counseling Services, she provided mental health counseling and sport performance consultation with student-athletes, team intervention, and coach consultation, in addition to her individual/group therapy and other clinical duties with non-student-athletes in Counseling Services.
Charbonneau is a member of the American Psychological Association, including Division 47’s Society for Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology, in addition to the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. She is currently pursuing her Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) credential and mark with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.
