Charles Montgomery joined the athletics communications staff as an assistant director of athletics communications/operations in February 2025 after serving two years as a graduate assistant in communications.
Montgomery serves as the primary media contact for wrestling and men's and women's swimming and diving at WVU. He also works as the in-game host for home WVU women's basketball and baseball games. Montgomery worked closely with Sidearm Sports for the redesign of WVUsports.com in 2024, helping choose the design of the homepage, team pages, schedule pages and more.
While serving as the media contact for the swimming and diving program, Montgomery was part of the team that hosted the 2024 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships in Morgantown. He has also attended the 2025 and 2026 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Washington, and Greensboro, North Carolina, respectively.
In three seasons as the SID for the swimming and diving program, Montgomery has grown the program's reach on various social media channels. In this role, he has developed original video and photo content for the program, helping to grow the program's followers on Instagram from just over 5,000 in August 2023, to over 12,000 in April 2026.
Montgomery joined the WVU wrestling program in December 2024. In less than two seasons as the SID, Montgomery has been part of trips to the 2025 and 2026 Big 12 Wrestling Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and traveled with the team for the 2025 and 2026 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Philadelphia and Cleveland, respectively. In this position, he has developed original video and photo content for the program, helping to grow the program's followers on Instagram from just over 17,000 in December 2024, to over 26,600 in April 2026.
He also works closely with the athletic communications staff for home football and men's basketball games. In this position, he helps manage the press box and press row for home WVU football and men's basketball games.
Following graduation in 2021, he spent 18 months as a digital reporter at WAFF 48 News in Huntsville, Alabama. Charles is from Grant, Alabama, which is just outside Huntsville, and resides in Morgantown.
He earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from West Virginia University in December 2021. He also earned a master's in Integrated Marketing Communications from West Virginia University in December 2024.
