
WVU Continues Road Swing at Kent State with Fisk

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team continues its season-opening road swing with a tri-meet at Kent State with Fisk on Sunday, Jan. 18. Competition inside the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center in Kent, Ohio, is tabbed for 1 p.m. ET.

West Virginia is 25-10 all-time against the Golden Flashes, with the two teams meeting for the first time in WVU's second season of competition in 1975. The Mountaineers and Kent State last met on Jan. 16, 2025, in Morgantown. KSU took the dual meet win, 193.775-192.325, over WVU. The two teams last met in Kent, Ohio, on Jan. 28, 2024, when West Virginia claimed a 194.825-194.05 victory.
WVU and Fisk have met just once before in a quad meet at Bowling Green on Feb. 11, 2024. West Virginia was victorious in the inaugural meeting, claiming a 194.7-192.3 win.
Following its first weekend of competition, the Mountaineers debuted at No. 15 in the Road to Nationals vault rankings. The vault lineup scored a 49.025 in the season opener on Jan. 9, with three of five scoring gymnasts posting a 9.8 or higher. Elsewhere, WVU ranks No. 48 overall, No. 41 on floor and No. 50 on bars. Individually, senior Carlee Nelson ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 and No. 11 in the southeast region on vault (9.85).
Last time out, West Virginia posted a final team score of 193.45 to finish in fourth place in its season-opening quad meet at No. 3 Florida with No. 24 North Carolina and Temple in Gainesville on Jan. 9. The host Gators placed first with a 197.725, while North Carolina was in second with a 196.675. Temple was just ahead of the Mountaineers in third place with a 193.875, followed by WVU in fourth. Of note, West Virginia started its season on the road for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
WVU recorded scores of 49.025 on vault, 48.35 on the uneven bars, 47.525 on balance beam and 48.75 on floor exercise. Freshman Kayla Smith made her career debut on the all-around, totaling 38.525 on all four events. Along with Smith, freshmen Haley Mendoza and Auden Pederson also made their career debuts in the season opener.
