MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
A trio of second-half scores helped lift the West Virginia University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Army inside Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.
Sophomore forward
Maddie Levy opened the scoring in the 54th minute and the Mountaineers (4-2) didn't look back from there. WVU went on to add scores in the 71st and 83rd minutes off an own goal from Army and the boot of freshman forward
Kailyn Effah, respectively.
Levy's tally was credited as the game winner, the first of her career. A beautiful pass from White found Levy inside the 6-yard box and she tapped it in for the score, giving White her team-leading fourth assist of the season. Then White sent in a cross that was intended for junior midfielder
Maya Leoni but was intercepted by Army's defense. However, the Black Knights' attempt to clear the ball went awry and into the net for an own goal.
Finally, Effah capped the scoring with her first career goal after getting on top of a ball that deflected off Army's goalkeeper and sending it across the goal line. She became the second freshman to score for the Mountaineers this season.
Offensively, West Virginia recorded 18 shots, nine shots on goal and six corner kicks. Saturday's game marked the sixth game this year where WVU has tallied double-digit shots and outshot its opponent. White led the offense once again with an assist and four shots.
The Mountaineer defense earned their fourth clean sheet and third in a row this year, holding Army to no shots and just one corner kick in the match. It marked the 20th time West Virginia has held a team to zero shots on goal since 2016, as well as the first second time this season.
West Virginia now looks ahead to a long road stretch with four straight games away from home. The road swing begins with WVU's nonconference finale at Marshall on Thursday, Sept. 11. Kickoff at Hoops Family Field in Huntington, W.Va., is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
