MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University baseball player
Griffin Kirn has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Kirn tossed a complete game in the Big 12 quarterfinals against Cincinnati, leading the Mountaineers to a 10-3 victory. He had nine strikeouts and just one walk while scattering eight hits and allowing just three runs.
The Quincy, Illinois, native was also named All-Big 12 First Team earlier in the week and for his performance against the Bearcats earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Kirn and the Mountaineers will be back this weekend for the NCAA Clemson Regional. WVU will take on Kentucky, Friday at noon from Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia heads to Clemson, South Carolina for the NCAA Regionals, May 30-June 3 ... the Mountaineers are the No. 2 seed in the regional and will face No. 3 Kentucky on Friday at noon ... the game will air on ESPNU ... host and No. 11 overall seed Clemson will face No. 4-seed USC Upstate, Friday at 6 p.m. ... it is a double-elimination format with the winner advancing to the NCAA Super Regional, June 6-9.

Notes: This week will mark the 17th NCAA Regional appearance for West Virginia ... it is the third straight regional berth, the first time making three consecutive since 1961-64 ... Kirn and West both made the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team ... it will mark the second time in three years that WVU will play Kentucky in a regional after going to Lexington in 2023 ... the Mountaineers are 2-11 all-time against Clemson, but did win a season-opening series against the Tigers in 2015 ... WVU has never played USC Upstate.
This week in Track and Field: West Virginia travels to Jacksonville, Florida for the NCAA East First Rounds on May 28-31 ... the Mountaineers are slated to compete in the first rounds of women's 800 meters and the semifinal of the 10,000 meters on Thursday ... then, WVU will compete in the semifinals of the high jump and 5,000 meters and the quarterfinals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday.
