Leigh Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W. Va.– After posting a pair of top scores on floor exercise at the NCAA Regional Championships, senior Anna Leigh of the West Virginia University gymnastics team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
The St. Michael, Minnesota, native scored a 9.875 on April 2, as the Mountaineers competed against Maryland in the First Round of the NCAA Pennsylvania Regional. The total helped her finish in second place in the final standings.
She then scored a 9.9 on floor while competing as an individual event specialist in the Second Round on April 3. The total marked her sixth score of 9.9 or higher on floor this season, while it also was the second-highest total from any gymnast on floor during the second session. She finished in a tie for sixth place at the end of the competition.
Additionally, Leigh finished the season with a National Qualifying Score of 9.91 and an average of 9.79.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia has four games this week, beginning with a home game against Penn State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. ... the Mountaineers will then go on the road for a weekend series at Houston ... first pitch on Friday and Saturday is set for 7:30 p.m. while Sunday is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.

WVU defeated the Buckeyes, 9-6 ... junior Logan Sauve had three hits and three RBI ... the Mountaineers took down Pitt, 11-1, in eight innings ... freshman Gavin Kelly tallied three hits and three RBI ... in the opener against Utah, the Mountaineers won 6-3 ... redshirt senior Griffin Kirn struck out 14 batters ... the Mountaineers hit four home runs in the game, including a game-winning two-run home run by senior Grant Hussey to break a tie in the eighth inning ... on Saturday, the Mountaineers swept a doubleheader, winning game one, 6-4, and game two, 14-4 ... in game one, senior Reese Bassinger tossed 4.2 scoreless innings to earn the win ... senior Brodie Kresser had a home run and four RBI in the game ... in the finale, sophomore Spencer Barnett went 4-for-4 while junior Skylar King drove in four runs.
Notes: The Mountaineers have won eight straight editions of the Backyard Brawl against Pitt ... the sweep of Utah was the first Big 12 sweep for WVU since taking all three against Baylor last season ... West Virginia has now had at least one Big 12 home sweep in each of the last four seasons ... Sauve had a stretch this week of reaching base in 10 straight plate
appearances ... Kirn's 14 strikeouts was the most by a Mountaineer since Jacob Watters struck out 15 against Texas in 2022 ... WVU tallied scores of 48.7 on vault, 48.55 on the uneven bars, 49.025 on balance beam and 49.05 on floor exercise ... in the final event standings, freshman Emerson Smith finished in second place on vault with a 9.8 ... sophomore Julia Brown tied for first place on beam, after earning a new career-best 9.9 on the event ... senior Anna Leigh also tallied a second-place finish on floor, scoring a 9.875 ... in the Second Round on April 3, Leigh and freshmen Karleigh DiCello and Sophia Rice competed as individual event specialists ... Leigh represented the Mountaineers on floor exercise and scored a 9.9 in her final routine as a Mountaineer ... DiCello competed on vault (9.825) and beam (9.8) ... Rice competed on vault and scored a 9.8.
