MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team will return to action on Monday, hosting the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
This will be the 10th consecutive Mountaineer Invitational. West Virginia won the team titles in 2024, April 2021, 2019 and 2018. Bowling Green won the event in 2017, Arkansas captured the team title in 2016 and Penn State won the inaugural event in 2015. No. 8-ranked NC State won in October 2021 and No. 21 Oklahoma State won the Mountaineer Invitational in 2023.
"This is a big opportunity for our team," coach Sean Covich said. "To have several of the best teams in college golf coming to our home golf course is something that we envisioned when we started this tournament 10 years ago. This is by far the biggest and strongest tournament field in the history of the Mountaineer Invitational, and I think that says a lot about the reputation of Pete Dye Golf Club as a championship venue and the growth of our WVU golf program."
West Virginia will be joined by 17 other teams at Pete Dye. No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 28 Texas Tech, No. 52 TCU, No. 74 Kentucky, Army West Point, Drexel, George Mason, James Madison, Marshall, Navy, Oral Roberts, Robert Morris, Tennessee Tech, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky and William & Mary will join the host No. 95 Mountaineers at Pete Dye.
Tee times will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Monday with all 18 teams scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday and then 18 holes on Tuesday, starting at 8 a.m. The event is free and open to the public. Pete Dye Golf Club is a par-72, 7,308-yard course.
This event will consist of five golfers per team with the top four counting in team scoring for each round. West Virginia's lineup will consist of seniors Todd Duncan and Max Green along with juniors Carson Kammann, Westy McCabe and Kaleb Wilson. Hugh Donegan, Pierce Grieve, Ryan Leach, Harrison Thompson and Nick Turowski will compete as individuals for WVU.
"This team still has a lot of talent and potential that hasn't been shown yet this season, but there's still plenty of golf and opportunities for something special to happen," Covich said. "Our seniors (Max, Todd and Pierce) are very talented and when they play their best they can compete with anyone in the country.
"Kaleb Wilson has really matured and developed into one of our best players and is having a very good season. Guys like Carson Kammann and Westy McCabe are playing some of their best golf, most consistent golf, and I'm excited to watch them compete. Harrison Thompson, Ryan Leach, Nick Turowski and Hugh Donegan have all been in our starting lineup at some point in their careers, and I know they will take advantage of this opportunity to showcase their game."
