Naukot Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After shattering West Virginia's 10,000-meter record, Joy Naukot of the West Virginia University track and field team has been named Student-Athlete of the Week presented by University Apartments.
 
The freshman claimed West Virginia's 10,000-meter record with a time of 32:21.84, while crossing the finish line in second place at the Raleigh Relays on March 28 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
 
Naukot's time broke a record that has stood since 2009, and she now ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 conference and Mid-Atlantic Region and No. 2 nationally in the event.
 
The Mountaineers will return to the road on April 4-5 for the Dalton Ebanks Invitational. The meet will be hosted by George Mason and will be held at the George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Virginia.
 
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia plays five games this week, beginning with a road game at Ohio State on Tuesday, April 1, before four home games against Pitt and Utah ... first pitch against the Buckeyes is set for 6 p.m. and will air on Big Ten Network Plus ... first pitch against the Panthers on Wednesday from Kendrick Family Ballpark is set for 6:30 p.m. ... the series against the Utes begins on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with Saturday set for 4 p.m. and Sunday at noon.
 
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers went 3-1 this past week against Marshall and BYU ... the week began with a 7-0 win over the Thundering Herd ... six pitchers combined for the team's second shutout of the season ... redshirt junior Chase Swain hit his second home run of the season in the  win ... the Mountaineers dropped game one of their series against BYU, 14-5... WVU came back to win game two, 20-6, to even the series ... sophomores Armani Guzman and Spencer Barnett combined for six hits, seven RBI, and four runs scored from the eight and nine holes in the order ... junior Skylar King hit his second home run ... on Sunday, the Mountaineers won a wild back-and-forth affair, 19-16, to clinch the series ... WVU went up 7-0 before falling behind 15-7 and scoring 12 runs in the final five innings to win the game ... junior Logan Sauve, sophomore Armani Guzman, and senior Jace Rinehart each hit a home run ... Rinehart finished the game with six RBI while Guzman had four ... senior Kyle West went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
 
Notes: The Mountaineers set a season-high with 20 runs on Friday before tallying a season-high 20 hits on Saturday ... The 80 combined runs in the three-game series this weekend is the most in a Big 12 series this season, surpassing the 63 runs scored between Arizona and TCU on March 14-16 ...WVU was ranked No. 16 by Perfect Game and No. 23 by NCBWA in last week's polls ... entering Wednesday's matchup, West Virginia has won seven straight editions of the Backyard Brawl.
 
This Week in Gymnastics: West Virginia prepares to open competition at the 2025 NCAA Pennsylvania Regional in University Park, Pa., from April 2-5 ... WVU will compete in the First Round against Maryland on Wednesday, April 2 at 2 p.m. ET inside Rec Hall ... if the Mountaineers top the Terrapins in the play-in meet, they will advance to the Second Round, taking on LSU, Arkansas and Michigan in a quad meet on Thursday, April 3 at 7 p.m.

Notes: West Virginia qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships as the No. 36-ranked team in the Road to Nationals rankings, posting a 195.855 National Qualifying Score (NQS) ... the bid marks the 44th regional championships berth for the Mountaineers, their 39th in NCAA competition, and the team's ninth qualification in the last 10 years ... West Virginia has advanced to the NCAA National Championships three times (1995, 1999, 2000) since 1983 ... additionally, WVU qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships for the first time since 2023 ... senior Anna Leigh and freshmen Karleigh DiCello and Sophia Rice were selected as individual event specialists ... Leigh qualified on floor exercise (9.905 NQS), Rice was selected on vault (9.835 NQS), and DiCello qualified on vault (9.84 NQS) and beam (9.85 NQS).
 
This Week in Tennis: West Virginia faces Texas Tech and Colorado in its final home matches of the season ... the Mountaineers face Texas Tech on Friday, April 4, and Colorado on Sunday, April 6.
 
Last Week in Tennis: The Mountaineers earned their first Big 12 Conference win of the season as they defeated Houston, 4-3, on March 28 ... WVU followed the win up with a loss to No. 19 UCF, 4-0, on Sunday.
 
Notes: West Virginia's match against Colorado will serve as senior day as five Mountaineers will be honored.
 
This Week in Track and Field: West Virginia will travel to the Dalton Ebanks Invitational on April 4-5 which take place at the George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Virginia.
 
Last Week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers had a record breaking weekend at the Raleigh Relays on March 28-29 in Raleigh, North Carolina ... freshman Joy Naukot shattered WVU's record in the 10,000 meters after posting a time of 32:21.84 on Friday, claiming second place ... additionally, classmate Naomi Kemboi set the program's 5,000 meter record with a time of 15:39.17, while finishing in sixth ... graduate student Sarah Tait trailed behind Kemboi in the event in seventh place, becoming No. 2 all-time with a time of 15:40.00.
 
Notes: With the time, Naukot ranks No. 1 in the 10,000 meters in both the Big 12 conference and the Mid-Atlantic Region while checking in at No. 2 nationally ... in the 5,000 meters Kemboi and Tait rank No. 5 and No. 5 in the nation, respectively.
 
This Week in Rowing: West Virginia will return to action at the George Washington Invitational April 12-13, in Washington D.C., at the Thompson Boat Center.
 
Last Week in Rowing: West Virginia opened its season, competing with split squads last weekend. All four boats at the Sarasota 2K advanced from the heats on Friday to the third finals on Saturday, resulting in the 2V4 placing third, the 1V4 securing fourth, the 2V8 coming in at fourth and the 1V8 earning fourth. WVU's 3V4 squared off against Robert Morris, defeating them by nearly six seconds, and the 3V8 raced closely with RMU's A and B boats, resulting in a second-place finish.
 
This Week in Golf: This week in Golf: The Mountaineers will return to competition on April 14-15 for the Mountaineer Invitational which will be held at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.
 
This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia finished its season with the 2025 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
 
Last Week in Swimming and Diving: Sophomore Owen Recker competed in two diving events at the NCAA Championships ... Recker placed 51st in prelims with 214.50 total points on the 3-meter and placed 37th in prelims with 274.70 total points on platform.
