WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah – The West Virginia University gymnastics team scored a 194.875 to complete competition in the first session of the 2025 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship, hosted at the Maverik Center in West Valley City, Utah, on Saturday afternoon.
 
WVU tallied scores of 48.675 on vault, 48.125 on the uneven bars, 48.975 on balance beam and 49.1 on floor exercise. The Mountaineers competed against BYU and Iowa State in the first session, as the Cougars led the way with a 196.275 and the Cyclones posted a 195.775.
 
West Virginia struggled a bit in its opening rotation on bars, unfortunately having to count a low score after two mishaps in the lineup. A pair of 9.725's from fifth-year senior Trinity Macy and senior Anna Leigh led the lineup, while senior Brooke Alban was close behind with a 9.7. Junior Brooke Irwin scored a 9.625, while a 9.35 from sophomore Amber Lowe capped the opening rotation.
 
The Mountaineers got their momentum back on beam, with sophomore Julia Brown and freshman Karleigh DiCello leading the way with a pair of 9.85 scores. Freshman Eden Webster anchored the lineup with a 9.8, while junior Carlee Nelson scored a 9.75. Leigh and Lowe wrapped up the scoring on beam with a pair of 9.725's.
 
WVU's floor squad did its thing in the third rotation, with freshman Sophia Rice scoring a career-best 9.9 to lead the way. Leigh scored a 9.85, while Alban was just behind her with a season-high matching 9.825. Freshman Riley Maness scored a 9.775, and Lowe added a 9.75 to cap the rotation.
 
West Virginia finished up on vault, where, despite a strong showing, the scores were not what the Mountaineers were hoping for. Rice once again led the way with a 9.8, while DiCello and classmate Taylor Tuohy added a pair of 9.75's. Nelson scored a 9.7, while Alban and Smith added matching 9.675's to finish the meet.
 
Final team and individual standings will be determined following the second session of the Big 12 Championship, which is tabbed for 7 p.m. inside the Maverik Center. Arizona, Arizona State, Denver and Utah are set to compete in the evening's second session. Final results will be available at WVUsports.com following the conclusion of the evening session.
