Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University track & field team have been named the Mid-Atlantic Region Women's Coach and Women's Track Athlete of the Year, by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Thursday afternoon.
McCabe earns the honor after finishing first in the women's 3,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 15, with a facility record time of 9:01.18. With the finish, she became the first woman in program history to win the event while earning her 10
th All-America honor.
At the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships, McCabe also took home gold in the 3,000 meters, with a time of 9:07.56 on March 1. Additionally, the graduate student aided in West Virginia's conference distance medley relay win when the Mountaineers claimed gold with a meet record time of 11:09.42.
Earlier in the season, McCabe shattered West Virginia's program record in the 3,000 meters when she finished with a time of 8:45.67 on Dec. 7 at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
Cleary boasted his first national champion as a head coach with McCabe and aided in the program's highest placement at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in history after taking fourth on March 1.
Cleary's distance runners combined to have four of the top eight times in the 3,000 meters within the Mid-Atlantic Region. Additionally, the distance squad finished with two of the top six times in the mile and ranked No. 3 in the distance medley relay.
The regional indoor track and field honor marks the second honor for McCabe, as she was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Year in 2023. Cleary earns his second indoor regional coach of the year honor, after being named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year in 2010.
