CINCINNATI, Ohio – The No. 18 ranked West Virginia women's basketball team collected its 13
th conference win with an 85-69 result over Cincinnati inside Fifth Thirds Arena on Saturday to close out the regular season.
WVU reaches 13 Big 12 conference wins in a season for just the third time in 13 seasons. The five conference losses also signify the second-fewest in Big 12 play and the least since losing just two during the 2014 season.
Senior guard
JJ Quinerly broke the 30-point mark for the second straight contest, scoring a game-high 31 points. It marks her sixth career 30 points game, tied for the most in a career in program history. She added seven assists and seven rebounds.
West Virginia dominated the glass, outrebounding the Bearcats 47-29, the 18+ rebounding advantage is the most against a conference opponent this season. WVU attacked the offensive glass with 21. Cincinnati turned the ball over 16 times in the game to mark the 62
nd straight game WVU has forced a team into 15+ in a game.
Junior guard
Jordan Harrison scored 21 points in the win while adding four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Freshman forward
Jordan Thomas finished two points away from tying a career-high with 16 points. She added a game-high eight rebounds.
Quinerly scored the Mountaineers' opening five points before assisting on a Harrison three to have a hand in WVU opening three baskets. The effort led WVU to a 10-7 lead at the first media timeout. Quinerly finished the quarter with 12 points to reach double-figures for the 95
th time in her career. UC hit a buzzer-beater three as WVU took a 21-15 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Quinerly carried her hot hand into the second, reaching the 20 points at the 4:07 mark, to give the Mountaineers a 38-28 lead. She finished the half with 24 points as the Mountaineers pushed to a 14-point lead at the break.
The Mountaineers outscored the Bearcats 20-19 in the third and 21-20 in the fourth to collect the team's 22
nd double-digit win of the season.
West Virginia is 12-5 all-time against UC, including a 5-3 mark when playing inside Fifth Thirds Arena. The Mountaineers have won nine straight against the Bearcats and collect their fifth straight win on the road.
West Virginia now waits to learn its seed for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship on Sunday evening. The championship is scheduled to run from March 5-9 inside the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
