MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team returns to competition on Saturday, Feb. 15 and Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Gators Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida, in Gainesville, Florida.
Fourteen teams are scheduled to compete, including No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 14 Florida, No. 25 USF, No. 30 UNC Charlotte, No. 52 Furman, No. 67, Florida Golf Coast, No. 80 West Virginia, No. 81 Liberty, No. 100 North Florida, No. 107 Georgia Southern, No. 150 Penn State, No. 156 UCF, No. 181 Eastern Michigan and No. 198 Jacksonville.
The Mountaineers will tee off at 7:45 a.m. Saturday on the par-70, 6,701-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course. Golfers will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 holes on Sunday, starting at 8 a.m.
"The Florida Gators Invitational is always a great event to be a part of," coach Sean Covich said. "We appreciate the multiple national champions Florida Gators for inviting us for so many years. Coach J.C. Deacon has been very welcoming to us, even when we were just starting our program, so I am always grateful to J.C. for inviting us to their home event."
Seniors Todd Duncan, Max Green and Pierce Grieve along with juniors Carson Kammann and Kaleb Wilson will represent the Mountaineers at this year's event. The top four scores will count towards West Virginia's overall team score. Freshman Ryan Leach will compete as an individual.
"We've enjoyed some success at UF, such as being in the final group with Vanderbilt and Florida in 2020, also Logan Perkins shot the lowest round in school history (62) at this course," Covich added. "Our guys really enjoy getting down to warmer weather in early February. Once again, the field will be challenging with Florida playing at home, a Top 10- ranked Oklahoma State plus other Top 25-ranked teams, like USF. I'm hoping we can continue to build off our performance at Briar's Creek."
