West Virginia Grinds Out Defensive Battle Against Oklahoma State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 21-ranked West Virginia University women's basketball team collected its first ranked win of the season after defeating No. 24 Oklahoma State, 54-37, on Saturday afternoon inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
 
The win over a ranked opponent marks the third time Hayhurst Family Head Coach Mark Kellogg has come out on top against a team featured in the AP Poll. It is the Mountaineers' first of its kind this season.
 
West Virginia put forth its best defensive performance of the season, limiting Oklahoma State to just 11 field goals and a 21.2% mark from the floor. WVU pressured the Cowgirls into a season-low 37 points, a mark 43 points below their season average of 80 points per game this season. OSU finished with just two assists in the game.
 
Junior guard Sydney Shaw finished with a game-high 18 points on 7 of 10 made field goals, including three from beyond the arc. Senior guard JJ Quinerly finished in double figures for the 21st time this season with 15 points. She added a career-high eight steals in the win as WVU finished with 15 steals for the contest. The Norfolk, Virginia native added four assists and four rebounds.
 
Quinerly's 15 points in the game pushed her to No. 7 on the all-time scoring list with 1,747, behind Talisha Hargis (1995-98) with 1,747. She is 3rd in steals with 300 and passed Hall of Famer Rosemary Kosiorek (1989-92) who has 293 on the list.
 
Junior guard Jordan Harrison finished with a team-high six assists, guiding WVU to 10 in the game, as senior Kyah Watson led WVU with nine rebounds. It is the 16th time this season Watson has led the Mountaineers' effort on the glass.
 
Shaw knocked down a deep three on the Mountaineers' opening possession of the game before six straight points saw Oklahoma State take the lead after three minutes. OSU failed to score over the final seven minutes of the first as WVU took a 10-6 lead after the first. OSU finished the frame 0 of 6 from the floor and coughed up eight turnovers during the Mountaineer run.
 
WVU held Oklahoma State scoreless over the opening four minutes of the second, running the OSU scoring drought to 11 minutes. The Mountaineers scored the opening six points of the second to take a 16-6 lead at the 6:06 mark. The Cowgirls cut the WVU lead down to five points two minutes later before WVU scored six straight points to head into halftime with a 23-14 lead.
 
Quinerly and Shaw finished the opening 20 with a game-high seven points as Quinerly added six steals, helping the Mountaineers force OSU into 13 turnovers. Oklahoma State finished the half just 5 of 22 from the floor and 0 of 9 from beyond the arc.
 
Oklahoma State trimmed the WVU lead down to six points out of the break. Shaw took over in the quarter, scoring eight of the Mountaineers' 18 points to help WVU to a 41-29 lead after three. The Mountaineers shot 53.3% from the floor in the quarter while the Cowgirls made just 3 of 15 of its attempts. OSU made use of a perfect 7 of 7 mark from the charity stripe to keep within striking distance.
 
West Virginia outscored Oklahoma State 13-8 in the final frame to secure the win. The Cowgirls cut the WVU lead to single digits at nine points at the 3:29 mark of the fourth but an 8-0 WVU run to close out the contest ended the OSU comeback bid.
 
West Virginia is now 16-14 all-time against OSU, including a 9-4 mark when playing inside the WVU Coliseum.
 
West Virginia is back at home on Wednesday, Feb. 5, against Kansas. Tipoff inside the WVU Coliseum is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
