MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Cullan Brown Collegiate was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather in Lexington, Kentucky, on Tuesday.
Kaleb Wilson and Ryan Leach paced the Mountaineers, tying for 14th place. Wilson shot 72-69=141 (-1), while Leach recorded rounds of 71-70=141 (-1).
Nick Turowski was +2 (71-71=144), Westy McCabe was +9 (75-76=151) and Jack Michael was +10 (78-74=152). Brody Burgess competed as individual and shot 76-78=154 (+12).
The Mountaineers finished in 11th place in the 15-team field, finishing two shots out of the top eight. West Virginia posted rounds of 291-284=575 (+7).
"Unfortunately, we weren't able to finish the final round," coach Sean Covich said. "Our guys were off to a good start and were making up ground. But the weather simply didn't cooperate.
"We definitely need to learn from the event, mainly how to stay patient with difficult hole locations, something we will see the remainder of the season, especially postseason. I'm still proud of the guys, they prepared well but just didn't have it in round one. We fought back in round two."
At the Red Flash Invitational in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Harrison Thompson finished tied for eighth place with three rounds of Even par (70-70-70=210). Aidan Dortch tied for 26th place at +5 (71-70-74=215), while Gabe Schmitz tied for 30th place at +6 (71-73-72=216).
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Oct. 25-26 at the Steelwood Collegiate in Loxley, Alabama.
