MURRAY, Ky. –
The No. 1-ranked West Virginia University rifle team collected two more ranked wins on its season-opening road swing. WVU scored 4744 to take down No. 8 Murray State (4706) and No. 19 UT Martin (4616) inside the Pat Spurgin Rifle Range in Murray on Sunday.
West Virginia ran its win streak to 29 straight matches. The streak spans three seasons and dates back to the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.
The Mountaineers produced winning efforts in both smallbore and air rifle, with scores of 2360 and 2384, respectively. Murray State finished with a 2335 in smallbore and a 2371 in air rifle, as UT Martin hit marks of 2286 in smallbore and 2330 in air rifle. The Mountaineers have yet to drop a discipline this season.
For smallbore and air rifle, juniors
Griffin Lake and
Lauri Syrja, and sophomores
Jennifer Kocher,
Ashlyn Blake and
Camryn Camp served as counters. In the field of 24, the Mountaineers claimed eight of the top 10 scores.
Lake set the pace for the second day in a row after producing the top marks in all three categories for the second consecutive match. The Emmaus, Pa., native scored a 594 in smallbore and a 598 in air rifle to total 1192 points. Kocher finished just behind in second place with a score of 1189. She tied Lake in smallbore with a 594 and added 595 in air rifle.
Lake's season averages of 1193 aggregate, 594 smallbore and 599 in air rifle lead the nation.
Syrja turned in a fourth-place finish with scores of 589 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle to total 1183. Camp scored a 1179 with a smallbore mark of 583 and an air rifle score of 596. Her effort in air rifle was the third-best mark of the afternoon. Blake finished just behind in a tie for seventh place with a 1177 after hitting a 582 in smallbore and a 595 in air rifle.
Junior
Maximus Duncan and Freshmen
Hana Strakusek and
Jack Ogoreuc also competed at the event.
Duncan produced career-best marks in smallbore and aggregate scoring to finish in fifth place on the overall leaderboard. He scored a 1180 with marks of 586 in smallbore and 594 in air rifle.
Ogoreuc scored a 1176 (583 SB – 593 AR) and Strakusek scored a 1173 (583 SB – 590 AR) to round out the scoring for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 18, when it competes against VMI in Lexington, Virginia. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET inside Kilbourne Hall.
