MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward
Taylor White was involved in all three Mountaineer goals to help lift the West Virginia University women's soccer team (7-2-2, 2-0-2 Big 12) to a 3-0 win over Arizona in its Big 12 Conference home opener at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Thursday night.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, White scored two goals and assisted a third to lead the offense in the win. The performance marked her second in the last three games where she was involved in all three Mountaineer goals. She leads the team with six goals, seven assists and 19 total points this season.
White opened her night with an assist on sophomore forward
Maddie Levy's game-winning goal in the 21st minute. White connected with Levy on an excellent pass into the box that only needed one touch from Levy for the go-ahead score. The goal was Levy's fourth of the year and her second game winner this season.
Then it was White's turn to find the back of the net, as she added tallies in the 53rd and 61st minutes in the second half. Both goals saw her break away from the Arizona defense and beat the Wildcats' keeper in the one-on-one as she managed to stay on sides in both breakaways. A long ball from junior defender
Jacey Rase assisted the first goal, while an excellent forward header from senior forward
Ajanae Respass assisted the second. The assist marked Rase's first points this season.
West Virginia dominated the final box score, outshooting Arizona 16-4 along with 6-2 in shots on goal. The Mountaineers took six corners compared to four for the Wildcats. Junior keeper
Bailey Herfurth and the WVU defense collected their seventh shutout of the season, holding Arizona to just a pair of shots on frame. Herfurth stopped both shots without much difficulty to preserve the clean sheet.
With the win, WVU's lead in the overall series moves to 2-0-1. Thursday's match was the first to take place in Morgantown between the two teams since 2004, while it also was their first as members of the Big 12 Conference at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Looking ahead, West Virginia continues its homestand when it welcomes Arizona State to Morgantown on Sunday, Oct. 5. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 12 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN+. It's WVU's Youth Soccer and Camper Reunion Day, as well as Alumni Day as the Mountaineers welcome former members of the team back to Morgantown.
