MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two teams looking to snap three-game losing streaks will meet today at Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando, Florida, when 2-4 West Virginia takes on 3-3 UCF.
The Knights (0-3 in Big 12 play) are coming off a 20-11 loss at Cincinnati last weekend, while the Mountaineers were idle following their 38-24 Friday night loss at 23
rd-ranked BYU on Oct. 3.
UCF's other two conference defeats were at Kansas State, 34-20, on Sept. 27, and 27-20 at home to Kansas on Oct. 4.
West Virginia (0-3 in Big 12 play) has also dropped games at Kansas, 41-10, on Sept. 20, and to Utah, 48-14, on Sept. 27.
"I thought the bye week came at a good time," West Virginia coach
Rich Rodriguez said. "I would have liked to have had it earlier. We got a chance to work on some fundamentals and tried to get some guys healthier, but we didn't quite get as many back as I wanted to."
UCF and West Virginia are in the unique situation of having its former coaches returning for second stints. Scott Frost is back with the Knights after five years at Nebraska where he didn't manage a winning season. In fact, Frost has just one winning campaign (13-0) in 2017 at UCF during his eight-year head coaching tenure.
Rodriguez, of course, led West Virginia to great heights in the mid-2000s before departing to Michigan. His post-WVU head coaching stops also included stints at Arizona and Jacksonville State before returning to Morgantown last December.
Rodriguez has faced UCF twice during his first stop at West Virginia, his Mountaineers defeating the Knights 36-18 in Morgantown in 2003, and 45-20 in Orlando in 2004.
WVU has played UCF twice since the Knights joined the Big 12 and both were victories – 31-21 in Morgantown last year and 41-28 in Orlando in 2023.
"This is the second half of the season and a fresh start, and I think they will be ready to play," Rodriguez said of his team.
Oddsmakers have installed UCF as a touchdown favorite.
Here is Today's Countdown to Kickoff:
