West Virginia Races Past Iowa State on Sunday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20-ranked West Virginia University women's basketball team collected its second straight win and 11th at home this season, defeating Iowa State, 82-68, on Sunday afternoon inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown.
 
The Mountaineers scored 30 points in the opening quarter and never looked back to pick up the win. WVU led by as many as 26 points in the preliminary stages of the third quarter before collecting a 14-point win when the final buzzer sounded.
 
WVU's defense set the tone in the contest, forcing the Cyclones into 25 turnovers and 26 points for the Mountaineers. Of those turnovers, 16 came in the first half as WVU was able to build an 18-point advantage at halftime. West Virginia crashed the glass for 40 minutes to lead the rebounding battle 34-34, including a 15-5 mark on the offensive end.
 
Senior JJ Quinerly and junior Jordan Harrison both scored 20 points in the contest, marking the second time this season the pair have reached the mark in a game. Harrison added a career-high seven steals and six assists.
 
Senior Kyah Watson recorded her sixth career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. It marks the second time this season she has reached the mark. Junior Celia Riviere also finished in double figures with 10 points while fifth-year Kylee Blacksten and junior Sydney Shaw managed eight. Shaw added six boards and three steals.
 
West Virginia and Iowa State traded baskets to the first media timeout as WVU trailed 12-10. The Mountaineers turned up the pressure, forcing four Cyclone turnovers over two minutes to pour in 11 straight points and take a 21-12 lead with three minutes to play.
 
Iowa State finished the final four minutes of the quarter just 1 of 7 from and coughed five turnovers. WVU outscored ISU 20-3 over the final 4:52 of the opening quarter to double up the Cyclones with a 30-15 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Harrison scored 10 of her points in the quarter on a perfect 3 of 3 mark from the floor.
 
WVU scored 12 points over the opening five minutes of the second to extend its lead to its largest of the half at 21 points. The Cyclones scored five straight points to trim the WVU lead down to 44-28 with a minute to play before a Harrison layup, her 16th point of the game, gave WVU a 46-28 lead at halftime.
 
Harrison finished the half 6 of 7 from the floor and dished out four assists. Watson also reached double figures over the opening 20 minutes with 10 points. WVU forced the Cyclones into 16 turnovers, two more than their game-season average in the half. The Mountaineers turned those mistakes into 22 points.
 
Quinerly had the hot hand out of the break, scoring 10 straight points for the Mountaineers to increase the WVU lead to 59-36 at the media timeout. The Norfolk, Virginia native cashed in twice from beyond the arc and added a floater in the lane and two at the charity stripe during her scoring spurt. WVU led by as many as 26 points in the quarter but took a 69-49 lead into the fourth quarter.
 
Iowa State outscored the Mountaineers for the first time in a quarter to close out the game, 19-13, as WVU cruised to a 14-point win.
 
The Mountaineers are now 15-12 all-time in the series and hold a 10-3 mark when playing inside the WVU Coliseum against the Cyclones.
 
Quinerly's 20 points in the game pushed her to No. 8 on the all-time scoring list with 1,679, and behind Hall of Famer Kate Bulger (2001-04) with 1,733. She is 4th in steals with 286 and sits just seven away from catching Hall of Famer Rosemary Kosiorek (1989-92) who has 293.
 
West Virginia is on the road next week in Arizona, first taking on Arizona State on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET inside Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona.
