MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two West Virginia University golfers finished in the Top 20 at the Gopher Invitational in the Mountaineers' season-opening tournament in Independence, Minnesota.
Senior Todd Duncan and junior Kaleb Wilson both recorded 19th-place finishes. Duncan shot Even par on Monday and finished with rounds of 73-74-71=218 (+5), while Wilson recorded rounds of 72-68-78=218 (+5).
Senior Max Green notched a 27th-place finish with rounds of 75-71-74=220 (+7). WVU had two golfers playing in their first collegiate competition with true freshman Ryan Leach shooting 77-79-78=234 (+21) and redshirt freshman Hugh Donegan posting rounds of 82-77-81=240 (+27).
The Mountaineers finished in 12th place with scores of 297-290-301=888 (+36).
"This was a very disappointing opening tournament for our team," coach Sean Covich said. "I know we have more talent than what we showed this week. This should serve as a wake-up call to our guys that last season is over and it's time to get to work."
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Monday, Sept. 30 and Tuesday, Oct. 1, when they host the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational at Mystic Rock Golf Course in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
