
Wetherholt Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior JJ Wetherholt of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Wetherholt hit .571 (8-for-14) with three home runs, eight RBI and seven runs scored in four games this past week. He had multiple hits in three games and reached base at least three times in three games.
The Mars, Pennsylvania, native now has 198 hits in his career after his big week. He would become just the 22nd player in program history to reach the 200-hit milestone and just the sixth player to accomplish the feat in three years.
Wetherholt and the rest of the Mountaineers will close out the regular season this week at TCU for a series from May 16-18. First pitch on Thursday, May 16, is set for 7 p.m. ET.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia hits the road for the final series of the regular season at TCU, May 16-18 … first pitch on Thursday, May 16, is set for 7 p.m. ET, Friday for 7:30 p.m., and Saturday for 5 p.m. … the Mountaineers will stay in Texas for the 2024 Big 12 Baseball Championship in Arlington from May 21-25.
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers went 3-1 in four home games … the week got started with an 18-7 victory over Penn State … WVU hit six home runs in the game off the bats of sophomore Logan Sauve, junior Brodie Kresser, sophomore Skylar King, senior Reed Chumley, sophomore Sam White and junior JJ Wetherholt … Kresser went 4-for-4 with five RBI and four runs scored … the Mountaineers dropped the first game of the series to Kansas State, 4-3, on May 10, but came back to win on May 11, 13-0, and May 12, 12-5, to take the series … senior Derek Clark struck out 10 in seven scoreless innings on Saturday … White hit his 10th home run of the season and drove in five in Saturday's victory … on Sunday, Wetherholt hit a home run and drove in four while King hit a home run and scored four times.
Notes: The Mountaineers have set a new program record with 17 Big 12 wins in a single season … overall, WVU is 31-19, reaching the 30-win plateau for the third straight season and sixth time in the last eight full seasons … four players have now reached double-digit home runs for the second straight season – White, Chumley, junior Kyle West and junior Grant Hussey … the Mountaineer pitching staff now has five shutouts on the season, tied for most in the Big 12 and 10th in the country … it was the second time this season that WVU hit six home runs in a game, also having done so against Kansas on April 7.
This Week in Golf: The golf team will make its second NCAA appearance since the program was reinstated when the Mountaineers compete in the San Diego Regional in Rancho Santa Fe, California, from May 13-15 … it marks WVU's second NCAA appearance for the program since it was reinstated in 2015-16 … WVU was a No. 8 seed in the Louisville Regional in 2019 … the Mountaineers are the No. 10 seed in the San Diego Regional ... they will be joined by seeds No. 1 Arizona State, No. 2 Washington, No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 4 California, No. 5 Oklahoma State, No. 6 North Florida, No. 7 Chattanooga, No. 8 USF, No. 9 San Diego, No. 11 Kansas, No. 12 Wright State, No. 13 Seton Hall and No. 14 Winthrop … senior Jackson Davenport, juniors Todd Duncan, Max Green and Pierce Grieve and sophomore Kaleb Wilson make up the West Virginia lineup … freshman Harrison Thompson will serve as the alternate … golfers will play 18 holes each day on the par-72 course … WVU is paired with Kansas and Wright State for the first round in tee times, starting at 12:25 p.m. ET (9:25 a.m. local) on the 10th tee … teams will be re-paired according to score following each round … six 54-hole NCAA Regional tournaments will be conducted from May 13-15 … thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of the three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams … the low five teams (30 teams total) and the low individuals (six individuals total) not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals … the NCAA Golf Championship will take place from May 24-29, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia defeated Pacific, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the 2024 UTR Sports NIT Championship on May 6 ... the Mountaineers lost to Tulsa, 4-3, in the semifinals of the NIT Championship in Bradenton, Florida, on May 7.
Notes: West Virginia earned its first postseason tournament win in program history against Pacific ... West Virginia finished a successful regular season with its most wins in a season (15) and first winning season since 2010 ... WVU also claimed its most Big 12 wins in a single season since joining the conference in 2013 ... this marked the 12th time the Mountaineers have eclipsed 15 wins in a season ... West Virginia earned its highest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking in program history at No. 47 earlier this season ... three players won 30 or more matches for WVU and six players won 20 or more matches this season.
This Week in Outdoor Track & Field: The Mountaineers will have a bye week before heading to the NCAA East Preliminary Round on May 22-25 … this year's preliminary round will be hosted by Kentucky at the Outdoor Track and Field Facility in Lexington, Kentucky … four Mountaineers will await selection for this year's preliminary round which will be announced on Thursday, May 16, on NCAA.com.
