Blue Squad Finds Success in 2024 Gold-Blue Regatta
April 08, 2024 02:38 PM | Rowing
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – WVU's Blue team won the annual WVU Gold-Blue Regatta on the Monongahela River, winning 130-112.
The Blue squad's win, ended a two-year streak for the Gold Squad.
"The Blue team really came out and competed well today on and off the water," senior coxswain Emily DeGlopper said. "Even though we only finished first in the open 8+, we were still able to rack up enough total points to secure the win. What really put us ahead was the work we put in on the ergs. We had several personal records and earned the fastest overall team average. It may not have been the cleanest rowing, but the team still did well working against the current."
Not only did the challenge include racing on the water, but the teams did a 2k on the erg, and those results factored into the results. The on-water events included an open 4+ race followed by the first- and second-year's 8+ race, third- and fourth-year's 4+ race and an open 8+ race.
The Blue team started the day earning the most points in the open 4+ race by a score of 32-30. It would only go on to win one more on-water event, but seven personal records on the erg were enough to down the Gold team.
The top individual time on the erg was achieved by Grace Armstrong, who represented the Gold team, and the highest erg team average went to the Blue team.
The Mountaineer rowing team returns to action this Friday/Saturday, April 12-13, at the George Washington Invitational at the Thompson Boat Center in Washington, D.C.
