Mountaineers Ready for Big 12 Gymnastics Championship

NORMAN, Okla. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team prepares for the 2024 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship, tabbed for Saturday, March 23, in Norman, Oklahoma. The conference championship is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET, inside the Lloyd Noble Center.
Along with host No. 1 Oklahoma, the Mountaineers will be joined by No. 8 Denver, BYU and Iowa State in Norman. The five teams will compete for the conference crown live on ESPNU, with Alex Perlman and Bridget Sloan on the call. Live stats from the meet also are available at WVUsports.com.
West Virginia enters Saturday's championship with an 8-15 overall record this season, as well as an 0-4 mark in conference competition. Last season, the Mountaineers played host to the meet in Morgantown, placing third for the second straight year. The finish marked WVU's first back-to-back, third-place finish at the conference championship since 2016-17.
The top-ranked Sooners enter the meet 25-0 overall and 4-0 in conference competition. The Sooners are the reigning Big 12 Champions after claiming the title the past two seasons. Denver is 19-2 this season and 4-2 in conference meets, while BYU comes into the championship 9-13 and 1-3 in Big 12 action. Iowa State has an overall record of 8-12, including 2-2 in conference.
In this week's Road to Nationals rankings, WVU sits at No. 51 nationally with an NQS of 195.43. Leading WVU's event rankings is the floor lineup, coming in at No. 43 nationally with an NQS of 49.2 and a season high of 49.275.
West Virginia capped the regular season with a season-high 196.0 and a second-place finish in a quad meet at No. 16 Minnesota with Air Force and Northern Illinois in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on March 17. WVU reached totals of 49.275 on floor exercise, 48.75 on vault, 49.1 on the uneven bars and 48.875 on balance beam. The Mountaineers' 196.0 total was good for second place in the quad meet, while the host Golden Gophers took first place with a 197.725. Northern Illinois finished behind the Mountaineers in third with a 195.875, while Air Force took fourth with a 195.125.
Fifth-year senior Abbie Pierson paced WVU on floor with a 9.9, while sophomore Emma Wehry led the way on vault (9.8) and balance beam (9.9). Freshman Amber Lowe paced the bars squad with a 9.875.
