West Virginia Runs Away in First Half of Senior Day Win over TCU

Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 24-ranked West Virginia University women's basketball team (22-6, 11-6 Big 12) defeated TCU, 57-49, inside the WVU Coliseum on senior day in Morgantown on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Mountaineers controlled play in the game, using a 20-0 run over 10 minutes in the first and second quarters to pull away early. WVU led by as many as 21 points in the second quarter before taking its largest of the game, 23 points, near the end of the third quarter.
 
WVU forced TCU into 27 turnovers while recording 16 steals in the contest. The turnovers forced are the sixth most this season and the most against a Big 12 opponent this season. WVU's high-energy defense held the top 3-point shooting team in the Big 12 to just five makes from beyond the arc and a 26.3% mark. The Horned Frog came into the contest shooting over 36%.
 
Sophomore guard Jordan Harrison and junior guard JJ Quinerly led the WVU scoring effort, scoring 14 points. It marks the 26th time this season one of the pair has led WVU in scoring. Harrison filled the stat sheet, adding six steals, five assists and four rebounds. Her steals and assists both led all players for the game. Junior guard Kyah Watson finished with eight points and a team-leading seven rebounds.
 
As a team, WVU shot 54.2% (32-of-59) from the floor, including 50% (9-of-18) from 3-point range. It marks the third and fifth time this season WVU has shot over 50% from beyond the arc and the field, respectively. The Jayhawks shot 23-of-53 (24.4%) from the floor and 15-of-13 (38.5%) from beyond the arc.
 
Harrison scored the opening four points of the game before a Kylee Blacksten layup gave WVU a 6-0 lead three minutes in. TCU responded with a 7-0 run to take a brief one-point lead just before the media break.
 
Harrison sparked WVU's 20-0 run, spanning till the 4:25 mark of the second quarter, with a corner three. WVU took a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, before scoring the first five points of the second to a 26-7 advantage at the midway point of the second quarter.
 
West Virginia dominated the half, forcing TCU into 15 turnovers and converting those miscues into 18 points. WVU limited the Horned Frog to a 5-of-20 mark from the floor, including just one made 3 from the conference's best 3-point shooting team. WVU led 37-17 at the break.
 
The Mountaineers managed its lead in the third quarter, extending its lead to 21 over the opening three minutes. WVU pushed their lead to 23 points with just over two minutes to play before taking a 48-30 lead into the final frame.
 
TCU outscored the Mountaineers 19-9 in the fourth, cutting the WVU lead to single digits in the final minute. West Virginia's defense settled in, securing the 57-49 win.
 
With the result, the Mountaineers move to 23-5 all-time against the Horned Frogs and are 10-2 in games played in Morgantown. The win is the ninth straight against TCU, dating back to Jan. 30, 2021.
 
Also of note, West Virginia reaches 23 wins in a season for the 11th time in program history.
 
Next up, West Virginia travels to Kansas City, Missouri, for the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship from March 7-12. The Mountaineers will find out about seeding and opponents on Sunday afternoon when all regular season Big 12 games are finalized.
