– West Virginia University junior golfer
Max Green shot 10-under-par to finish tied for second place at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Georgia, this weekend.
Green shot 5-under-par in the final round to lead the Mountaineers to a two-spot improvement from Saturday. He finished with rounds of 71-68-67=206. In WVU's last tournament at the Dorado Beach Collegiate, Green finished in third place.
WVU posted the lowest round in the field on Sunday at 10-under-par to finish in eighth place in the 14-team field at 13-under-par (292-281-278=851), one shot behind Wisconsin and No. 25 Mississippi State for sixth place and two shots behind No. 58 South Carolina for fifth place. WVU finished ahead of No. 54 Florida Gulf Coast, No. 66 NC State and No. 67 Kentucky.
Senior
Will Stakel and sophomore
Kaleb Wilson each shot 2-under-par on Sunday. Stakel finished tied for 23
rd with rounds of 73-70-70=213 (-3), while Wilson finished tied for 45
th with rounds of 74-73-70=217 (+1). Fifth-year senior
Trent Tipton shot Even par on Sunday and shot Even par for the tournament with rounds of 74-70-72=216, tying for 41
st place. Junior
Todd Duncan shot 1-under-par on Sunday and finished 3-over-par with rounds of 75-73-71=219.
"I'm very proud of the guys this week, especially today," coach
Sean Covich said. "Having the low round on Sunday shows what we are capable of.
Max Green is playing some great golf. He's really establishing himself as an elite player.
Will Stakel has been playing some of the best golf of his career. I'm very happy for him. We need to carry this momentum from a great finish at The Schenkel into The Hootie at Bulls Bay."
After one round at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tennessee, senior Oli Menard shot 1-under-par and is tied for third place. Senior
Jackson Davenport shot Even par and is tied for seventh place, sophomore
Westy McCabe posted a 4-over-par round and sophomore
Carson Kammann recorded an 86. All four are competing as individuals with the second round on Monday and third round on Tuesday.
As a team, Mountaineers will return to action from Sunday to Tuesday at The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Charleston, South Carolina.
