
Mountaineers Fall to BYU in Conference Opener

PROVO, Utah – The West Virginia University gymnastics team fell to BYU, 196.475-193.5, in its Big 12 Conference opener inside the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, Friday night.
The Mountaineers (3-4, 0-1 Big 12) were forced to overcome obstacles throughout the meet, with their highest event score of the night coming on floor exercise with a 48.95. WVU added scores of 48.075 on vault, 48.225 on the uneven bars and 48.25 on balance beam.
Opening up on bars for the second straight meet, the lineup was led by a 9.725 from freshman Amber Lowe. Junior Brooke Alban and freshmen Jayden McDonnell and Jurnee Lane added a trio of 9.675 scores. Due to a fall, a 9.475 from sophomore Miranda Smith was counted to round out the scoring. Of note, Lane made her career debut on bars Friday night, hitting her routine under pressure to cap the lineup.
Continuing to vault, WVU was led by a season-high 9.825 from senior Kiana Lewis. Alban earned a 9.75, and McDonnell made her career debut on vault, scoring a 9.725. A 9.575 from junior Sierra Muns and a 9.2 from senior Ellen Collins completed the rotation for West Virginia.
The Mountaineers regained some momentum on floor, as a 9.825 from Lowe paced the rotation. Alban and Collins scored matching 9.8's, which marked a career high for Alban and a season high for Collins. Completing the scoring were a 9.775 and a 9.75 from Lewis and Lane, respectively.
Closing the meet on balance beam, freshman Julia Brown earned a 9.75 to lead the way. Smith tallied a 9.7, before Lewis secured a 9.625. Lane made her career debut on beam and earned a 9.6, while a 9.575 from Lowe closed the competition for the Mountaineers.
After making her career debut on beam, Alban tallied her first career performance in the all-around. Scoring a 38.725, she took first place in the final event standings. Elsewhere, Lewis tied for first place on vault.
Up next, West Virginia completes its three-meet road swing with a trip to Bowling Green for its first quad meet of the season. Joining the Mountaineers at BGSU will be Eastern Michigan and Fisk. Competition inside the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio, is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
