
Mountaineers Begin Double Weekend at Penn State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team is set for its first double weekend of the 2024 season, opening the two-meet stretch at Penn State with Ball State and Towson on Friday, March 1. Action inside PSU's Rec Hall in University Park, Pennsylvania, is tabbed for 6 p.m. ET.
The meet will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus, while live stats also are available at WVUsports.com.
WVU is set to compete against Penn State in the regular season for the first time since 2020, while the Mountaineers and Nittany Lions also competed in the First Round of the 2021 NCAA Regional Championships in Morgantown. Overall, PSU holds a 40-8 advantage over West Virginia in the series.
The Mountaineers will meet Ball State for the second consecutive season after competing in a season-opening quad meet at Florida on Jan. 6, 2023. WVU leads the series, 12-1. Meanwhile, West Virginia and Towson meet for the seventh time in the past eight seasons, with a pair of matchups in 2017, 2022 and 2023. WVU holds a 28-13 advantage in the series.
Last time out, West Virginia recorded a season-high 195.55 team score in a dual meet against No. 1 Oklahoma inside the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla., on Feb. 23. The Mountaineers recorded solid scores on every event, led by a 49.125 on floor exercise. They also added scores of 48.975 on vault, 48.75 on the uneven bars and 48.7 on balance beam. The top-ranked Sooners took first place in the dual, recording a program-record score of 198.675 to take the top spot.
On bars, freshman Amber Lowe's 9.825 led the lineup, while fifth-year senior Abbie Pierson led the way with a 9.825 on vault. West Virginia kept it up on floor, as Pierson and Lowe recorded 9.85's to pace the squad. Finishing out on beam, sophomore Emma Wehry led the way with a 9.85.
This week's Road to Nationals rankings mark the first week of the season that rankings are based on National Qualifying Score (NQS). WVU sits at No. 51 nationally with an NQS of 194.925. Leading WVU's event rankings is the floor lineup, coming in at No. 46 nationally with an NQS of 49.05 and a season high of 49.25
