West Virginia Earns 24 Great American Rifle Conference Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Seven shooters from the West Virginia University rifle team earned a combined 24 honors on the 2023-24 All Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Team, the league announced.
Of WVU's 24 All-GARC honors this year, seven student-athletes made the smallbore team, six made the air rifle team and seven were a part of the combined (smallbore and air rifle) team.
Additionally, senior Matt Sanchez was named the GARC's Shooter and Senior of the Year, after averaging scores of 590.1 in smallbore, 594.6 in air rifle and 1184.8 overall in 2023-24. It marks the second straight season a Mountaineer has collected both honors with fifth-year Mary Tucker collecting both honors last season.
The Tampa, Florida, native is the 11th student-athlete in program history to be named the conference shooter of the year. He is also the first 13th in program history named senior of the year.
Freshman Griffin Lake was named the GARC Rookie of the Year for his performance this season. His marks of 587.8 in smallbore, 593.6 in air rifle and 1181.5 combined average gave him the honor. The Emmaus, Pennsylvania, native is the ninth Mountaineer to earn the distinction and the first since junior Natalie Perrin collected the honor in 2022.
Fifth-year Molly McGhin represented West Virginia in the GARC's Scholar-Athlete category.
In smallbore, Sanchez was selected to the first team with the highest average (590.1) as Lake (587.8), junior Gavin Barnick (587.7) and McGhin (587.6) also earned a spot on the first team. Junior Tal Engler (586.0) and fifth-year Malori Brown (585.8) were named to the relay's second team and Perrin (584.8) was tabbed an honorable mention.
In air rifle, McGhin (596.6) and Sanchez (594.6) were named to the first team, while Lake (593.6) and Perrin (593.6) garnered second-team honors.
Barnick (593.5) and Perrin (593.3) were selected as an honorable mention in air rifle this year.
Sanchez and McGhin swept first-team honors and were named to this year's combined team, with averages of 1184.8 and 1184.3, respectively. Lake also finished on the combined first team with an average of 1181.5. Barnick (1181.2), Brown (1179.1) and Perrin (1178.5) were named to the aggregate second team while Engler (1176.1) was an honorable mention to round out this year's honors.
