Mountaineers Close Out Texas Swing with Win Over TCU

Box Score FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 24-ranked West Virginia University women's basketball team got back in the win column on Tuesday evening in Fort Worth with a, 77-52, victory over TCU inside Schollmaier Arena.
 
West Virginia used a solid defensive effort to pull away from TCU, recording 16 steals while forcing 20 TCU turnovers. WVU has hit the mark in steals 10 times this season and reached double-digits in the category for the 21st time. The Mountaineers scored 21 points off Horned Frog turnovers and added 19 on the fast break.
 
WVU dominated the paint outscoring TCU, 50-18, from the high percentage area. West Virginia added a 40-33 rebounding advantage, including a 14-10 mark in the offensive glass. West Virginia shot 48.5% from the floor and knocked down six 3's. TCU managed just a 33.9% mark from the floor.
 
The Mountaineers (21-3, 10-3 Big 12) were led by sophomore guard Jordan Harrison who finished with 19 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. She is now just two assists away from 300 for her career. The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native finished 9-of-12 from the floor.
 
Junior guard Kyah Watson narrowly missed her second straight double-double, scoring 12 points and adding eight rebounds. She led all players on the glass and added a career-high five steals. Junior guard JJ Quinerly finished with 15 points as fifth-year guard Jayla Hemingway added 12 points.
 
The Mountaineers opened the game on a 7-0 run, scoring its opening five points off TCU turnovers. WVU pushed its lead to 11-2 at the midway point but TCU chipped away, taking a 14-13 lead with 80 seconds to play. A Tavy Diggs block led to a Hemingway fast-break basket with 35 seconds to play as the Mountaineers took a one-point advantage after 10 minutes.
 
The second quarter was all the Mountaineers, outscoring TCU 17-5 in the frame. WVU held the Horned Frogs scoreless over the final 3:33 of the quarter and outscored TCU 13-2 over a seven-minute span in the frame. The effort gave the Mountaineers a 32-19 lead at the break.
 
West Virginia opened the second half with six straight points to take a 19-point advantage. The Mountaineers pushed its lead to as many as 28 points in the quarter, due in large part to an 18-8 scoring advantage over the final five minutes. WVU led 60-32 entering the fourth.
 
West Virginia managed its largest of the night in the opening minutes of the fourth, taking a 31-point, 66-35, lead. TCU outscored WVU in the final quarter, but the Mountaineers rolled to a 25-point victory.
 
With the result, West Virginia moves to 22-5 all-time against the Horned Frogs and 9-3 in games played in Fort Worth. The Mountaineers have now won eight straight against TCU, dating back to the 2020-21 season.
 
Next up, West Virginia returns home for a 1 p.m. ET matchup with Oklahoma at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown on Saturday. The contest will be broadcast on Big12 Now on ESPN+ and the Mountaineer Sports Network, including 100.9 FM.
