West Virginia Headed to Gulf Coast Showcase Championship

ESTERO, Fla. – The West Virginia University women's basketball team is headed to the Gulf Coast Showcase Championship game following an 84-47 win over Boise State on Saturday inside Hertz Arena.
The Mountaineers collected their eighth win of the season by 20 or more points and is the sixth by over 30. WVU relentless defensive effort forced Boise State into 23 turnovers, which the Mountaineers turned into 27 points. West Virgina shot 47.8% from the floor and limited the Broncos to a 31.4% mark.
WVU also held an advantage on the glass at 40-32, including a 12-8 mark on the offensive end. The Mountaineers turned the ball over just 11 times while attempting 16 more field goals across the 40 minutes.
Senior guard JJ Quinerly surpassed 1,500-career points in the win. The Norfolk, Virginia native has now totaled 1,502 points in 102 career games to rank 14th on the programs all time leaderboard. She finished the game with 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Junior guard Sydney Shaw matched a career-high with 20 points on a 7 of 10 mark from the field. Freshman forward Jordan Thomas finished with 10 points and added six rebounds. Senior Kyah Watson led the way on the glass with eight rebounds and added four steals. Junior guard Jordan Harrison finished with nine points and five assists.
The win is the eighth straight to open the season, marking the second consecutive season WVU has hit the mark. It is just the seventh time since the 2000 season the Mountaineers have opened with seven straight wins.
Of note, WVU is now 1-0 all-time in the series against Boise State. West Virginia is 5-2 all-time against the Mountain West Conference. West Virginia is a perfect 19-0 in regular-season nonconference action under head coach Mark Kellogg.
Next up, West Virginia plays either No. 5 Texas or Butler in the Gulf Coast Showcase Championship on Sunday, Dec. 1. Tipoff for the Mountaineers final contests is set for 7:30 p.m. ET inside Hertz Arena.
