MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team closed its fall season this past Sunday at the Bucknell Novice Invitational on the Susquehanna River in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
"Before we even talk about racing, I want to remark on how well the athletes did in conducting themselves in the lead up to the race," associate head coach Tina Griffith said. "We had multiple things happen that could have made a negative impact, but everyone was able to consistently roll with it and not let it impact their mindset. This is especially pleasing since this was a first race for almost every person on the team."
In the first round, the Mountaineers were paired with Bucknell C. WVU won by open lengths and recorded the second-fastest time among all of the boats in the round.
The second round saw Susquehanna put on the most pressure of any of West Virginia's opponents, but they were able to maintain their lead and finished with an eight second victory for the fastest time of the round.
To finish, WVU raced Bucknell D, pulling out a convincing victory with the fastest time in the round.
"As for performance, I am very proud of what they did out on the water," Griffith said. "They raced hard and fast with or without pressure and were able to produce consistent and fast times. We are excited to see how well we performed today, and with continued effort, we hope this indicates good things to come in the spring"
