McCabe Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Ceili McCabe of the West Virginia University cross country team has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

McCabe finished in first place at the Live in Lou Classic on Oct. 5 in Louisville, Kentucky with a personal best time of 16:06.0 in the women's 5k. With the time, the senior broke the meet record in a field of 263 student athletes.

Saturday's race marked McCabe's first cross country race since 2022 in a West Virginia uniform.

The Mountaineers are slated to compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Oct. 12 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The race is set to be held at Schenley Park and kicks off at 10:45 a.m. ET.

This Week in Men's Soccer: The No. 7 West Virginia University men's soccer team has one game on the road at Georgia Southern on Friday evening ... kickoff from Eagle Field in Statesboro, Georgia is set for 7 p.m.

Last Week in Men's Soccer: The Mountaineers went 2-0 on the week with wins over Bucknell and UCF ... West Virginia defeated the Bison, 1-0, in Lewisburgon Tuesday ... graduate student Sergio Ors Navarro scored the lone goal of the game just over a minute into the contest ... Ors Navarro also scored the first goal in a 2-1 win over the Knights at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Saturday ... junior Marcus Caldeira had the game-winner in the 49th minute ... graduate student Max Broughton, sophomore Sam Nyenka, and freshman Isaac Scheer each had assists.

Notes: West Virginia is tied atop the Sun Belt standings with seven points alongside Marshall ... the Mountaineers have started the season unbeaten through 10 games for the second straight season and third time in four years ... the are one of just six remaining unbeaten teams in the nation along with James Madison, Denver, Ohio State, UConn, and Western Michigan ... Ors Navarro is tied for the NCAA lead with 10 goals.

This Week in Women's Soccer: The Mountaineers head back on the road for their final two-game road swing of the regular season, first taking on No. 23 TCU on Thursday, Oct. 10 ... kickoff at the Horned Frogs' Garvey Rosenthal Soccer Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET ... WVU then wraps up the road trip at Baylor on Sunday, Oct. 13, in Waco, Texas, with kickoff at Betty Lou Mays Field set for 2 p.m. ET.

Last Week in Women's Soccer: Behind a second-half goal from fifth-year senior midfielder Lilly McCarthy, West Virginia picked up a 1-0 win over UCF at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown on Oct. 4 ... after a scoreless first half, McCarthy took advantage of a penalty-kick chance in the 55th minute to put the Mountaineers (9-2-2, 5-0-1 Big 12) on top ... the final box score was indicative of the close match, with the Mountaineers just outshooting UCF, 14-11, including 6-4 in shots on goal ... WVU earned seven corner kicks on the night, while UCF posted five.

Notes: With the win over UCF, WVU remained unbeaten in Big 12 play, as it continued its best start in league play since 2016 ... furthermore, West Virginia is riding a nine-match unbeaten streak, also its longest since 2016 ... West Virginia improved to 3-1 all-time against UCF, including a 2-0 mark in matches played in Morgantown ... the victory was WVU's first against UCF in Big 12 Conference play.... McCarthy's game-winning goal against the Knights marked her first of the season and the second of her career ... junior forward Ajanae Respass continues to lead the Mountaineers with six goals and 16 points this season, while McCarthy, fifth-year senior AJ Rodriguez and junior forward Taylor White are all tied for second on the team with four apiece ... West Virginia currently sits in a two-way tie for first place in the Big 12 Conference with Texas Tech.

This Week in Volleyball: West Virginia returns home for a three-game home stand ... the Mountaineers first welcome No. 8 Kansas to Morgantown on Oct. 10, first serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET, inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown ... the Mountaineers then will host Kansas State on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.

Last Week in Volleyball: The Mountaineers dropped a pair of matches to UCF and Houston on the road on Oct. 2 and 4, respectively ... the Knights defeated WVU, 3-0 in Orlando, Florida on Wednesday, followed by a 3-1 loss to the Cougars, in Houston on Friday evening.

Notes: Redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton leads WVU with 205 kills, and 26 service aces ... Tanton ranks No. 5 in the Big 12 conference in service aces, and ninth in kills and points ... graduate student libero Sydney Reed leads the squad with 215 digs on the year, ranking ninth in the conference ... sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold has dished 530 assists along with 22 service aces, ranking 10th in assist and service aces in the Big 12, respectively.

This Week in Golf: West Virginia returns to action Monday through Wednesday at the Big 12 Match Play Championship … the event will take place at The Clubs at Houston Oaks, in Hockley, Texas, outside of Houston … for the seventh consecutive season, teams will compete at the par-71, 7,007-yard The Clubs at Houston Oaks … the tournament will feature match play rather than stroke play … during pool play, each team will play matches during three sessions, followed by a bracket play round and then the final round … teams will get three points for a win and one point for a draw … the Mountaineers will face off against Utah on Monday morning at 7:45 a.m. CT, and will go against BYU on Monday afternoon at 1:15 p.m. CT … on Tuesday morning, the Mountaineers will face off against Houston at 7:45 a.m. CT … on Tuesday afternoon, matchups for bracket play will be finalized after the third match … the placing round will begin Wednesday morning at 7:45 a.m. CT … WVU will travel six golfers to Texas with five competing in each match. Seniors Todd Duncan, Pierce Grieve and Max Green, juniors Carson Kammann and Kaleb Wilson and freshman Ryan Leach will head to Big 12 Match Play … on Monday and Tuesday, three WVU golfers will compete in the Red Flash Invitational in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, at Sunnehanna Country Club … the Mountaineers will be represented by junior Westy McCabe, redshirt freshman Hugh Donegan and freshman Nick Turowski.

Last Week in Golf: WVU junior golfer Kaleb Wilson shot 7-under-par to win his first collegiate tournament to help lead the Mountaineers to the team championship of the inaugural Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational at Mystic Rock Golf Course at Nemacolin Resort in Farmington, Pennsylvania … Wilson was the only golfer to shoot under par in all three rounds, posting scores of 71-68-70=209 … he becomes the fifth different WVU golfer to win a collegiate tournament, and it marks the eighth time a WVU golfer has won a collegiate tournament … as a team, the Mountaineers won a tournament for the 10th time since the program has been reinstated, shooting rounds of 288-291-287=866 (+2). WVU defeated second place George Mason by 12 strokes in the 14-team tournament … in the individual standings, the Mountaineers captured the first four spots with senior Todd Duncan (72-69-71=212) and freshman Ryan Leach (73-67-72=212) tying for second place at 4-under-par … Leach played as an individual for WVU. Senior Pierce Grieve shot 71-75-69=215 for a 1-under-par score, tying for fourth place … junior Carson Kammann competed as an individual and shot 71-80-70=222 (+5) to finish tied for 13th place … senior Max Green recorded rounds of 74-79-77=230 (+14), junior Westy McCabe competed as an individual and shot 80-80-76=236 (+20) and freshman Nicholas Turowski posted rounds of 78-81-78=237 (+21).

This Week in Cross Country: The Mountaineers will compete at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Oct. 12 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ... Saturday's 6k is set to be held at Schenley Park, at 10:45 a.m. ET.

Last Week in Cross Country: West Virginia claimed victory at the Live in Lou Classic on Oct. 5, out of 27 teams with 36 team points ... the Mountaineers were led by senior Ceili McCabe, who finished in first place with a meet record and career best time of 16:06.0 in the women's 5k ... next, freshman Joy Naukot claimed fourth place in her collegiate debut, with a personal best time of 16:25.9 ... graduate student Madison Trippett rounded out the top-10 for the Mountaineers, finishing eighth with a time of 16:58.3.

This Week in Tennis: West Virginia is off ... the Mountaineers will return to action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic Regional from Oct. 17-22, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia played host to the Martha Thorn Invitational ... for the weekend, the Mountaineers had solid performances from five student-athletes ... the doubles pairing of senior Michaela Kucharova and redshirt junior Maja Dodik finished 3-0 ... Dodik also led the way in singles play, winning two matches.

This Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia is off ... the Mountaineers will return to action at the team's Alumni Meet at The Aquatic Center at Mylan Park in Morgantown on Friday, Oct. 18.

Last Week in Swimming and Diving: West Virginia officially began the 2024-25 season at the WV State Games ... the men's team won the meet, finishing with 1,709 points ... the women's swimming and diving team finished just behind Marshall with 1,410 points ... the Thundering Herd earned 1,483 points.

Notes: The highlight of the meet came as three divers posted NCAA Zone Diving qualifying scores ... senior Sarah Krusinski posted scores to qualify on the 1-meter and 3-meter ... sophomore Owen Recker qualified on the 1-meter and 3-meter ... freshman Levi Hellmann qualified on the 3-meter ... senior Danny Berlitz was dominant, winning three individual events (200-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke) ... he was also part of three relay teams that placed first in an impressive performance by the men's swimming and diving team.

This Week in Rifle: West Virginia does not compete this week.

Last Week in Rifle: The Mountaineers picked up three season opening wins … WVU defeated No. 20 Citadel (COED) and Citadel (Women) on Saturday before taking down No. 5 Georgia Southern on Sunday … West Virginia defeated Citadel (COED) 4744-4588 and Citadel (Women) 4744-4577 on Saturday … WVU then defeated Georgia Southern 4728-4727 to close out the weekend … against Citadel, Ashlyn Blake and Lauri Syrja finished in first place with 1188 scores … Blake posted the highest smallbore score with a 592 while Camryn Camp scored a 599 for the highest air rifle mark … Camp swept all three disciplines against Georgia Southern with a 1192 (593 SB – 599 AR).

Notes: Camryn Camp finished in first place in aggregate, smallbore and air rifle against No. 5 Georgia Southern … she scored a 1192 (593 SB – 599 AR) … She added a sixth-place finish against Citadel for an aggregate score with a 1181. Her 599 in air rifle was the best mark in the field and her 582 in smallbore placed seventh.
